A Losing Bet(te)
“No they won’t!”
“Yes they will!”
“No they won’t!”
“Yes they will!”
“Won’t!”
“Will!”
“WILL NOT!”
“Yes. They. WILL!!!”
“Bullshit!”
“Whatever!”
“Typical reply!”
“Just watch.”
“Oh, I will.”
“Okay, good.”
“Great.”
“Wonderful.”
“Fantastic.”
“Yeah.”
“Yep.”
“Care to place a wager on that?”
“…”
“Or are you chicken?”
“ALICE!” Dana yelled at her girlfriend.
“Fuck that, what’s the wager?”
“Babe, no. Don’t.” Tina pleaded, her hands gently tugging on her girlfriend’s arm.
“Alice, that’s enough!” Dana chided, trying to get the smaller woman to back down.
“Come on guys, take it easy,” Shane, ever the mediator, attempted to quell the tension.
“No money,” Alice said holding Bette’s glare with one of her own from across the table. “Wardrobe wager.” She said with thought-provoking intensity.
Dana, Tina, and Shane stifled their giggles.
“Oh God. Al, do you not remember losing the wardrobe wager last year? Or the year before that?” Shane shook her head at her unlucky friend.
Alice remained silent, still staring ahead at Bette while the brown-eyes brunette smirked at her best friend remembering the last couple gambles they had hedged against one another.
Last year, the bet was over who would win Best Actor. Bette picked Sean Penn hands down while Alice insisted that Mickey Rourke was the shoe-in. When it came time for Bette and Tina’s annual Oscar party, Alice was frustrated to discover that she had to paint herself gold the following morning and stand in front of the Planet with a gold sword during the breakfast rush.
The year before, Bette was positive that Michael Phelps would break the record for the most gold medals won at the Olympics, but Alice thought that since she heard he was a pothead, his reduced lung capacity would affect his performance time. The week after he won his eighth gold medal, Alice was required to go to work in nothing but a swimcap, goggles, and an authentic USA swimsuit.
Needless to say, Alice was the underdog when it came to their wardrobe wagers.
“I’m in.” Bette said with an air of smugness. She looked over at Tina and winked. “I got this, baby.” She whispered. “So what will you be wearing this year, Al?”

I enjoyed this story but it brought up painful memory for my Celtic loving heart, I had a bad few days after that game trying to forget it every happened. Anyone who tried to talk to me about that game, during those days, was told to “Shut-the-fuck-up”, my boss took great pleasure at bringing it up frequently, and I hated him for that.I still maintain that the 7th game was stolen for Lakers, the 6th was won fair and square because my stupid ass Celtic hadn’t come to play that game, they came to watch the Lakers beat their ass, but that 7th game was stolen. Anyway just know that I KNOW how Bette felt a thousand over. Thanks for the story even thought it brought painful to the surface.
Loved this story, funny and hot all rolled into one. You do one shots so well :)
