    A Night in the D — Chapter 14

The first thing Tina noticed was Bette’s suitcase. Packed. Standing by. The elephant in the room, supposing Tina wanted to notice it, which she didn’t. She stared it down momentarily before deciding to shrug it off.

    Among other things.

She tossed her jacket across the back of the room’s single chair and turned to face Bette, who hadn’t moved from the door. She looked hot, she looked eager, but she wasn’t exactly taking full advantage of the situation. That much Tina did notice.

“This room” Tina said, glancing around her. “It’s-”

    “*****?” Bette’s voice was amused.

“Yeah,” Tina breathed, exhaling into a frown. “I thought it was just the job. I didn’t know it was the rooms too.”

Bette laughed. “Yeah, well, apparently your employers don’t only not care about you. They don’t care about me either.”

“Oh really?” Tina asked, feigning surprise. “You haven’t enjoyed your stay? We haven’t treated you well?”

Bette cocked her head and pretended to think. “Hmm, I can’t say I regret choosing this hotel, though the guy at the airport actually chose it, not me.” She gave a knowing smile. “But I have been, at times, disappointed.”

“Only at times? Consider yourself lucky.”

“Well, more times lately than is usual for me.”

“What’s usual for you?” Tina’s voice was light but the question leaned towards serious.

Bette cast a doubtful look in her direction. “Tina,” she admonished playfully, “Don’t kill the *****.”

Tina laughed, so genuinely she felt delirious. “Believe me, I’m not killing anything. I have every intention of dying a symbolic death with you at an undetermined time.”

“Ah,” Bette flirted. “So we’ve at least determined that.”

“Right,” Tina assured, her confidence blooming. “I’m not doing us in. More like you’re doing me, I’m doing you.” She paused and winked. “Not necessarily in that order.”

    Bette swallowed. “God”

    Tina laughed. “You’re blushing.”

    “Nooo.”

“You are,” Tina insisted. “I’m an expert on blushing.”

“You should beyou’re so fair. You’re a dead giveaway.” Bette winked back.

“Right,” Tina sighed, pouting. “And that’s so not fair.”

    “It is lovely though.”

Bette’s voice wasn’t teasing. It was soft, almost rapt. She finally moved from the door, easing her way towards Tina, who unconsciously widened her stance and watched, with a sudden calm, as those dark brown eyes drew closer, and larger.

And the eyes had it, because Tina found that she only wanted to observe. To relish. To let herself feel the exquisite torture of wanting this woman she couldn’t actually have, except in this moment. This one moment she then hoped might infect her mind for many moments after, organically, as something pure and lovely and innocent. A beautiful memory.

Her peripheral vision registered the suitcase, so decided in its purpose, but Tina’s central vision was all Bette, and she didn’t feel much indecision there either. “Don’t kill the *****, Tina.” She repeated the words to herself.

She got the sentence out once, in her head, before Bette was upon her. Before she was out of her head altogether.
