    A Second Chance at Forever

Their parting so many years earlier had been contentious, and as such they had agreed to avoid the emotions that always threatened to bubble over by refusing to have any at all. Tina couldn’t deny that she felt nervous at this invitation, yet was comforted by the fact that Bette was in a relationship. It really was time for more of a friendship with the woman she had committed to raising a child with.

    Chapter 2

Bette was marking some papers while Angelica did some mathematics problems at the dining room table.

"I thought we’d just spend the day doing fun things together if I had the school call," Angelica said quietly.

"You weren’t really sick, were you?" Bette asked, after slipping her reading glasses off and setting them down.

"Not really," Angelica admitted. "But I knew Mommy would be too busy today and couldn’t get me. And I know you don’t teach on Thursdays."

"Mommy’s coming over for dinner tonight before you two go home together," Bette tried to be nonchalant in transmitting this tidbit of information.

"Really?" Angelica asked, pulling her head back as she furrowed her brow.

Such mannerisms always startled Bette – they reminded her so much of Tina it almost transported her back in time.

    "Are you cooking?" Angelica continued.

"Of course I’m cooking, sweetie," Bette replied. "We always have home cooked meals when you and I spend the week together."

Their conversation was interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell.

Angelica jumped off her chair and rushed to the front door. She flung the door open and greeted Tina with a big hug.

    "Hi Mommy," she said cheerily.

"Looks like you’ve recovered from needing to take the afternoon off of school," Tina said as she drew Angelica into her embrace.

"Mom’s going to cook dinner tonight," Angelica’s skepticism was apparent before she completed her thought. "For all of us."

"I know," Tina replied. She glanced up towards the doorway between the kitchen and the living room. "Hi Bette."

Bette had leaned onto the door jamb to observe the interaction between Angelica and Tina. She noted in passing how amazing Tina looked, especially as she and Angelica hugged at the door.

    "Hey Tee," she replied.

"Thanks for the invitation," Tina said smiling genuinely at Bette. "Nice to have a break from preparing a meal now and then."
