    A surprise breakfast

Bette saw Tina’s back to her when she walked into the Planet to grab a bite of breakfast before heading off to school. She was sitting by the open patio doors, reading the LA Times.

Bette walked up quietly behind her and leaned forward to whisper in her ear.

“I missed waking up with you this morning.”

“Shhh, my girlfriend’s sister owns this place, you never know who’s listening,” Tina didn’t miss a beat. She turned as she finished the sentence and feigned an innocent look.

    “Oh hi sweetie,” she smiled.

“Aren’t you so very witty this morning,” Bette said. “Mind if I sit down? Or perhaps you want to keep the seat open for a better offer.”

“I’ve had other offers,” Tina nodded to the chair. “I think I’ll stick with you. And for the record, I missed waking up with you this morning too.”

“What’s in the news?” Bette asked as she sat down.

“I was reading a story about a couple that’s been together for 30 years,” Tina replied. “They got married yesterday.”

She slid the paper over for Bette to see the picture that accompanied the story.

“I love reading all these stories,” Bette said as she looked at the picture. “Gives you hope that change is possible.”

“It’s nice that the option is available to us now,” Tina pulled the paper back, folding it up into its constituent parts. “I think the server is coming over here. I haven’t ordered yet.”

“So do you want to?” Bette asked.

“Yeah, I haven’t eaten,” Tina replied. “I’ll need more than just coffee today.”

“No, I mean, do you want to get married?”

“We’re not even living together yet,” Tina laughed, thinking Bette was entirely joking.

“There was a time when people got married before they lived together,” Bette said.

“What can I get for you this morning,” the server stood poised with her pen over a pad of paper, ready to take their order.

“Spinach and feta egg white omelette with a fruit cup,” Bette said. “Oh, and a soy latte, no foam.”

The server looked at Tina and awaited her order. Tina was still looking at Bette perplexedly.

“Oh, yeah,” she exited her state of confusion. “Same omelette, also with a fruit cup, but I’ll just have a regular refill.” She nodded to her half full coffee cup.

“Great,” she replied. “Be right back with the coffees.”

    Tina turned to Bette again.

    “Are you serious?” she asked.

“I actually am,” Bette said. “We can get a license today and go to City Hall tomorrow. Or anytime in the next 90 days once we have a license.”

“You’ve actually investigated this?” Tina asked.

“I’ve never wanted to marry anyone but you,” Bette said. “So I’ve been looking into what the requirements are.”

“And what are they?” Tina asked.

“We both need to be present to apply for the license, with photo and age identification,” Bette said, pulling her personal digital assistant from her purse. She tapped the screen with the stylus before continuing. “The closest location for its purchase is on La Cienega Boulevard.”

“And what about the ceremony?” Tina asked.

“As simple or as elaborate as you would like it to be,” Bette said. “I was thinking it could just be the two of us. With Angelica of course.”

    “Witnesses?”

“Whoever is available on short notice with few questions,” Bette smiled.

“I’ll meet you for the license at one o’clock this afternoon?” Tina reached for Bette’s PDA and jotted down the address.

“I’ll call for an appointment at City Hall for tomorrow,” Bette confirmed. “What time are you free?”

“Anytime after two,” Tina replied. Something occurred to her. “Oh, rings…”

“Do you want to go shopping after you pick Angie up tonight?” Bette said.

“You want new rings?” Tina asked.

    “I do,” Bette said.

A confirmation of a renewed commitment to lives spent together.

    “I do.”

    (the end.)
