    A Thin Line – Chpt 32

“Oh, shit!” Bette exclaimed. “Sweetheart, I need to run an errand.”

Surprised, I said, “Can I go with you?”

    “No,” Bette smiled.

    I gave her a pout.

“I won’t be long,” she laughed at my exaggerated expression. “Can I get you anything while I’m out? Do you need anything to prepare dinner for your mother?” Bette asked considerately.

“Actually, I do need a few things at the grocery if you don’t mind. I’ll make a list,” I replied.

“Okay, do that while I get dressed,” Bette instructed me, hurrying to exit the pool.

A wondered where she suddenly had to go and what she had to do, that I couldn’t go with her.

    Chapter 32

Friday, when I’d talked to Helena on the phone, she’d told me she had a surprise for me on Sunday. And I quickly figured out that my dear new girlfriend was being the consummate romantic. Sunday marked a week since we’d started seeing one another, and obviously she wanted to celebrate the occasion appropriately. I, however, didn’t divulge to her that I was onto her plan, because I wanted to do a little surprising of my own.

What in the hell kind of gift, though, do you get for a rich heiress who has everything?

My first choice had been rather extravagant. So perhaps it was best that that idea didn’t pan out. I’d decided I wanted to purchase the painting that we’d both admired at the art exhibit Thursday evening, Out of the Darkness, Into the Light: Finding You. But when I arrived at the gallery Saturday afternoon, I was promptly informed that the piece had already found its way into another admirer’s hands. I was crushed, to say the least. And of course, then I was forced into some quick thinking to come up with a satisfactory last-minute surprise for Helena. As I drove back to the beach house, I shook my head disappointedly, brooding about how uncreative and trite it all was going to appear. But it would just have to suffice.

Arriving back at Helena’s, I rolled up to the gate. Helena had given me the code to open the entrance, and I pressed the numbers quickly. Pulling onto the grounds, I glanced at my watch. It was getting close to 6:00. That left little time to get ready for dinner and Peggy’s arrival at 7:00.
