    A Wasted Life

If there’s one thing I hate its airport waiting room music.  That combination of light rock and “today’s hits”.  They always play this crap in waiting rooms.  It seems to be louder at the airport somehow.  Probably to be heard over he jet engines.  In comparison the one thing I may hate more are airport ticket booth attendants.  I focus on the horrible song playing now to drown out the cheery ass red head in front of me.  She’s blathering on about the weather or traffic or something as the ticket prints.  I stopped listening long ago.  I eagerly retrieve the $600 cash for the ticket from my pocket.  She looks at me a bit sideways as I count out the twenties.  I’m sure people have paid for more in cash then this so I’m not worried.  If they do check me they won’t find anything.  I memorize my assignments and as I said before weapons aren’t my style.  If they’re necessary it won’t be hard to obtain them.  I finally get away from the grinning red head and grab a seat staring out on the expansive tarmac.  To my surprise I hear a song I recognize.

    Alice:  “I love this song.”

    Bette:  “Me too.”

Alice:  “Lots of ladies in here tonight huh?”

Bette:  “Yeah but I’m not looking.”

Alice:  “Oh right you have a main squeeze now.  How’s that going?”

    Bette:  “Great.  She’s….special.”

Alice:  “That’s good.  Real good.  Another?”

    Bette:  “Um, sure.”

Alice quickly ordered me another drink as we continued to make small talk.  After about the 5th drink she had bought me I realized Alice was trying to get me drunk.  She was also more attentive to me then usual.  She would keep asking me if I was ok.  I was fine but I thought it in my best interest to pretend as if I was a little more messed up then I actually was.  Whatever it was she had to say to me it was obvious she wanted deniability.  I figured I’d let her think she had it.

Alice:  “So Porter, how you liking the FBI thus far?”

    Bette:  “Its ok….alright.  I um…I like it.”

    Alice:  “Even the desk duty?”

Bette:  “Well that kind of sucks at times but I’m working my way to field duty.  That’s the way it goes right?”

    1. This is one very intriguing story, definitly looking forward to more, and i’m with BeautifulRagdoll, wouldn’t be dissappointed at all if Tina wasn’t alive in this. Can’t wait for the next post.

    2. Is Tina dead? Cause… I’d be ok with that.Besides that though, I like the insights of Bette. Your writing a really complex character
