A Working Class Sacrifice
6 Years before Present Day
Tina sat on the stationary bike next to Dana, pedaling for all she was worth. Her quad muscles felt as they were wound to a wheel which was being slow cranked. Dana was fairing a little bit better, her tennis training an acceptable precursor to this type of workout. Even so, Dana’s face was rippled with sweat. The instructor was in the process of guiding them through a climb.
“Let’s go to Vegas this weekend,” Dana said, turning to face her friend while continuing to pump her legs.
“That’s two days away,” Tina answered. “You want to hop a plane to Vegas in two days?”
“Yeah, why not? I thought we could hit some gay clubs.”
Tina raised here eyebrows questioningly.
“Think about it. No one will know us there.”
“Dana, you’re a professional tennis player,” Tina reminded her.
“Okay, let me rephrase. No one will know our families there.”
“Oh, you mean Mrs. Orange County Fairbanks doesn’t fraternize with the Vegas gays?” Tina joked.
“Cute.”
The instructor took them through their cool down, a tedious but necessary part of the workout. As the class neared an end, the others stood and stretched, cleaned off their bikes with sanitary wipes. Tina remained in her seat, rested her head on the handlebars.
“I can’t move,” she said sluggishly.
“Teeny,” Dana cooed, coming around to the front of Tina’s bike. “Pleeease come to Vegas with me. I am more sexually frustrated than you could ever understand.”
“Somehow, I find that hard to believe,” Tina said, heaving one leg over the seat of her bike to stand.
“What, me being sexually frustrated?”
“No. Me not understanding.”
The girls showered and put on street clothes, and were now venturing out onto the sidewalk into town. They walked quietly for a few minutes, each lost in their own thoughts.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, okay?” Tina said to Dana. “I just… I don’t think you should have to go out of town to meet women, Dana.”
“Well, I don’t either, obviously. I mean, I certainly wish things were different.”

Oh god. Her mother didn’t really pressure her into that, did she? Please not. This story’s so good, atlas. Thanks :) (but you’re totally breaking my heart here. Still gonna be reading tho ;) )
This story is making me cry! I can see the parents putting on the pressure already. PPS

I am hoping her mom didn’t pressure her
Tina stay ing w/her husband out of obligation. Such BS! Tina needs to grow a pair. You write very poignantly and realistically. Excellent story.
Well, “spumoni” is the most delicious dessert the world has ever known. I found out later about the “safe word.” Who would have thought that writers of those kinds of movies would have such excellent taste for frozen confections! For your story, the heartache of choices we make, voluntarily or by circumstances, and opportunities lost and regrets felt–you are writing this so well. I especially admire this chapter’s Dana/Tina conversation–their sense of being trapped although we, looking in from the outside, find their self-imposed limitations to be absurd and almost incomprehensible. In this chapter, Tina is not even thirty and she has herself living this unfulfilled life for the next half century. Thankfully, it IS fan fic!!!!! I am looking forward to your next chapter.
awww no!!! tell Tina not to listen to her mother she is an adult. She doesn’t need to obey her parents any longer DOES she?
Tina is to weak, what a mess.
at first your way of writing might appeare as a bit disturbing but I think this jumping bethween different time planes (does English use this term?) was an excellent idea from you! plus-more importantly-you can use this not so common, maybee rare technique so successfully, it is amazing…and the result is: a very capturing storryline.thank you.
Hi atlasundone, The clouds are beginning to lift as little snippets of information appear. It seems as if Tina has sacrificed her love for Bette for a better life for her family.I hope now that time has pasted these gals can reunited and rekindle there love. It has burnt constantly over the last 15 years and needs to be flamed to grow again.I hope that Bette and Tina get together as they belong in each others’ arms. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
