"Okay I didn’t draw these," Trey said.

James cocked an eyebrow and crossed his arms in a fatherly way. Bette simply smiled that ‘I knew it’ smile and remained silent.

"Dad you know my girlfriend?" Trey said.

"Yeah Mikah, she drew these?" James said.

Bette looked more interested wondering if this was the same Mikah Tina told her about.

Trey seemed to read her thoughts and said, "yes Ms. Porter, it’s the same Mikah, your new girlfriend’s daughter."

James looked angry, "what are you doing exactly?"

"Nothing bad!" Trey defended lifting his arms, "she just wanted me to get to know Ms. Porter more, she doesn’t want her mom to get hurt."

James looked at Bette apologetically, "I’m sorry boss."

Bette just smiled, "it’s alright. Well I want to meet your girlfriend Trey, she’s an amazing artist, and if my assessment was right she’s also a great person. Just like her mother."

    Trey smiled softly, "she is."

"Why didn’t you just tell me that Trey?" James said with a sigh, "you know I don’t like lies."

    "I’m sorry dad," Trey said.

"Trey," Bette said, "may I keep these sketches?"

    "Sure," Trey said.

"Now that you’ve got what you wanted, go home Trey," James said.

Trey nodded and turned, "bye dad."

He pulled out his phone and dialed Mikah’s number as he walked out of the office. "Hey, so what’s the prognosis?" Mikah immediately asked.

"She’s an amazing person Mikah, if she ever hurts your mom it wouldn’t be on purpose," Trey said.

    "Yeah?" Mikah said.

"Yeah, I couldn’t even lie to her," Trey said, "she kept your sketches."

"W-what? You told her! No Trey!" Mikah cried, "she’s so gonna tell my mom!"

"And what’s wrong with your mom knowing you love her?" Trey said.

    Silence.

"I’ll go over for lunch later," Trey said.

"Okay," Mikah said with a deep sigh.

James glanced at Bette as she gathered her things. "You’re angry?"

"At your son for acting like a P.I? Of course not Jimmy," Bette said.

    James sighed deeply, "good."

"He had good intentions," Bette said.

"So where are you going?" James asked as Bette put Mikah’s sketches in her briefcase and closed it.

"I just text Tina, I’m gonna have breakfast with her," Bette said.

    1. Thanks for the post! I love that the many stories are reaching out into other avenues of characterization of our two favorite women. It great to see them act in other ways than the ones that they’ve been for many years. Its all good!
