After Tonya Chapter 7: Breakdown
Dana climbed into Shanes truck silently with a face of stone. Alice walked over to Shanes open window, Ill meet up with you guys tonight at Radar. Okay, well see what we can dig up. Shane said patting Danas leg. Im gonna do some digging of my own. Alice said walking away from the truck and toward her mini on the other side of the parking lot. Shane put the truck in gear and made her way to the exit. She looked over at Dana whose facial expression had not changed since she got into the truck. Its okay Dane, well stop this. She said putting her hand on Danas shoulder. I promise. Danas expression did not change and Shane thought it best to leave her to her own thoughts. She could not imagine what was going through Danas head right now. Sure, Shane had dealt with many crazy ***** and had been threatened countless times, but she was used to it she was the tough one. Shane had also brought all of them on herself with her actions. This was all new for Dana, she was the quiet one. She could not help but feel sorry for Dana; she had done nothing to deserve this. All she had done was to be her ***** kicking, beautiful, friendly self. She had not done anything to offend anyone. Shane found a parking spot outside The Planet and turned the engine off. She turned to see that Dana still had not moved. “Ummm” Shane carefully broke the silence. “Are you going to come in?” Dana barely moved her head, but Shane knew the answer. “I’ll be right back.” Shane jumped out of the truck and jogged into The Planet. Three minutes later she emerged with a cup in each hand. Dana watched her as she walked up to the car. Dana reached over and opened the driver’s side door for Shane. Shane climbed in and handed one of the cups to Dana. “I got you a decaf mocha.” Dana managed a weak smile. “Okay, I just have one more appointment.” Shane said as they drove away. The rest of the ride was silent and somewhat uncomfortable. Shane pulled into a kind of legal parking spot in front of the salon; she put the truck in park and turned the engine off. She looked over at Dana just as a tear escaped her left eye. Dana quickly wiped the tear away, but she knew Shane had already seen it. “Oh, honey, don’t cry. It will be okay.” Shane said moving closer to Dana and putting her arm around her shoulders. Dana wiped another stray tear from her face, “I’m so scared.” She said as more tears began to fall. Shane pulled Dana into a hug, “It’s okay, I won’t let her hurt you.” Dana sniffed as she slightly pulled out of the hug, “Not me, Alice.” She looked into Shane’s eyes, tears falling freely now, “I can’t believe I got her into this. I could never live with myself if something happened to her. I love her so much. I need her.” Shane moved her hands from Dana’s shoulders to her face, “Listen to me Dana, none of this is your fault. Okay? Alice might not look it, but she’s tough. She can hold her own. She’ll be okay.” Shane finished pulling Dana into another hug. “It’s going to be okay.” She whispered in Dana’s ear, attempting to calm her down. A knock on the window behind Dana startled her. She had not realized just how jittery she really was until she nearly knocked Shane’s teeth out when she jumped. “It’s okay.” Shane said, “It’s just Tina. She’s my last job of the day.” She looked at Dana, “Are you going to be okay?” Dana nodded and turned toward the door. Both girls climbed out the passenger door. Tina saw Dana’s eyes and immediately got worried. “Oh Dana, what’s wrong?” she asked putting her hand on Dana’s arm, the concern evident on her face. Dana opened her mouth, but could not speak. Shane put her arm around Dana’s shoulders once more, “I’ll tell you all about it.” Shane said leading Dana toward the door of the salon. “No, we can do my hair some other time. We should get her home.” Tina said standing on Dana’s other side and putting her arm around her waist. “Nnnothhome.” Dana stuttered. “Of course honey, what about The Planet?” Shane asked Dana. She nodded in agreement. Tina was confused, but said nothing. “Let’s take my car.” Tina said pointing down the street. “I’m going to need my truck. Do you want to go with T?” Dana nodded again. “Okay, I’ll meet you there.” Shane said giving Dana one last squeeze and walking over to the other side of the truck. Tina led a still shaking Dana down the street to where she had parked the car. The ride to The Planet was quiet, Dana stopped crying, but Tina could tell she was still being torn apart inside. After what seemed like an eternity they arrived at The Planet. The two women silently and slowly got out of the car. Shane walked into The Planet to see Tina and Dana at the counter ordering some drinks. She made her way over to them spotting Marina across the room helping some customers and giving her a wave. “Hey, I’m going to go get us some seats in the back.” Shane said when she got to the girls at the counter; she made her way to the back without waiting for an answer. She found an open couch and took a seat. She took out her cell phone and dialed a number. Tina and Dana got their drinks and headed back toward the couch Shane was sitting on. As they sat on the couch Shane hung up the phone. “Hey Shane, what’s up?” Dana asked pointing at the phone, hoping it was some information. “I have to go meet someone in a bit to pick up some stuff. We’ll see if it’s any good.” Shane replied with a hopeful look. “So, is anyone going to tell me what’s going on?” Tina asked with her eyebrows raised. Dana pointed to Shane, she was still too busy thinking to retell everything right now. Tina looked over to Shane wondering what was going on. Tina’s mouth hung open in shock when Shane finished telling everything. She could not imagine anyone threatening Dana. She was the least harmful of all Tina’s friends. She even felt guilty whenever she killed a bug. How could anyone hurt Dana? This was just too much information for Tina to completely wrap her mind around. What about Alice? This woman sounded like she was going to go after Alice. Tina now understood why Dana had been crying so much. She realized she was probably more afraid for Alice than herself. Shane stood up and picked her keys up off the small table next to the couch. “I’m going to head out now. T, will you stay with Dana for a couple hours?” “Of course.” Tina replied. Shane turned and began to walk away. “Wait!” Dana said so quickly it took both Shane and Tina by surprise. Shane turned back around to face her. “Don’t tell Alice about what happenedthe breakdown I mean. I need to stay strong, I know she feels guilty.” Shane nodded knowing what Dana meant. “Definitely” Tina said patting Dana’s leg. Shane turned and left. Dana pulled out her phone and hit a few buttons, “I need to call Alice.” Tina stood up and moved toward the bathroom to give Dana some privacy.
