Previously: In the last chapter, after Bette and Tina had a confrontation in Madeleine’s office and Bette told Tina that she wasn’t just having sex with Tina’s junior colleague but that also she might be the ‘one’, Tina went to go be by herself in a park area of the hospital. Bette eventually went to go talk to Madeleine. The patient in ICU, Marti (Jane Doe), is a previous patient of both Bette’s and Tina’s. She had been to the hospital a number of times, but mostly as a psyche patient. Bette treated her once, a long time ago, because she was seriously wounded physically and Marti came to become fond of her like big sister. But that was a while ago and during this most recent admission, Bette hadn’t recognized Marti…and when she finally did, it threw her for a loop…the fact that she had forgotten her and suddenly the important words she had once said to her. It’s important before you read the next chapter to remember the small part at the end of the conversation between Madeleine and Bette in the last chapter when Bette seems to freak out a bit when she tries to explain what she’s been feeling:
“This is crazy. I probably just need a holiday. Maybe Amertadi and I just need some time…” (Madeleine is tempted to roll her eyes but refrains…) “There’s no…it’s just…I’m just tired…so friggin tired. And Bassey’s on my case half the time…”
“Bassey? Honey, Bassey’s on everyone’s case and she’s been on your since you got here…that’s not the issue…”
“It’s just one thing after another…I feel like I can’t breathe…” (Bette puts the verbal breaks on…she stops cold, almost as though she just realized something. She looks around and gets up abruptly. Madeleine slowly stands too.)
“Bette?” (Bette looks like her mind is adjusting to some sort of shock.) “Bette???”
“I …I gotta go…I have rounds…” (Bette, her eyes moistening, is seeming tense.)
“No, it’s ok, you don’t have to…”
“I’m sorry I have to go…thanks for listening. I’m sorry…sorry about everything…I…we can…can we? I don’t know…”
“It’s fine…we can continue this later. I’ll make time…”
“It’s ok, I’ll get back to you…” (She’s anxious to leave…) “Bye…I gotta go…”

Wow, this was a great chapter. Very emotional. Bette needs to compose herself & then go talk to Tina.
so Bette realized that Marti needs Air…went to see her to check that…and also realizes that Tina and She are still connected?? Wait…i’ll just wait til you post again and find out!
Such an emotional chapter, like the direction the story is taking. At least one of them is confronting their feelings. Now I’m hoping that Bette takes her days off to reflect and open up to Tina about her revelation. Excellent, Merlin!

Wow, now that is an insight to elusive Dr. Porter. I guess that she is talking about Tina being that true love. Somehow she needs to let Tina know if she really feels that Tina is the “ONE”.
Hey Merlin, now that was emotional. I guess bettes old life has come to a end, i’m glad Madeline is there for bette, but i would prefer it if tina was there!!!
This was a fabulous chapter and Marti was so right about the heart, love and breathing analogy. They operate but they don’t function as well without the other one with that real connection to it. That was a wondrful analogy. Surely Bette will take the time off to assess her feelings about, with and for Tina. I know they still love each other and Bette needs to try and talk with Tina and see that a reconciliation is not out of the question. Maybe they can overcome the problems and find a way back to each other. PPS
I see we are getting to the heart of the matter (breathing being intimately involved with the function of the heart). Oh, physician(s) heal thy self! Bette and Tina need to raid the pharmacy for some tranquilizers. Bassey may need more than that.
Bette opens up, now we need tina to open up to her real thoughts on bette and they MUST talk to one another. bassey is way over the top and needs some major chill pill, one strong enough to down a elephant,lol she is raving lunatic,lol.great update!
Whoa, maybe it’s Bassey who needs to breathe. Power tripping seems to have cut off her own air supply. And why is Bassey so involved anyway as to be moved to tears after her outburst? Especially as she just told Bette that she didn’t give a “rat’s ass” about her feelings? Bassey got an unfulfilled crush? Anyway, enough of that. Bette and Tina need to have one of those air-clearing talks, so they can start breathing again, as it were. Very good, TM, thanks for the post.

oh my god, what a great chapter. was practically holding my breath whilst reading. bette shud take the few days she has off to dig deep into her soul and find her air supply and go after it. i hope u w post the next one tomorrow :)

Hey TMerlin, Thank you so much for this exciting and different interpretation of Bette and Tina’s relationship. I do hope that Tina is Bette’s air supply. I think that realizing that Marti was in the hospital has made Bette face her worst fears. Suddenly the sky was following oin on Bette. Bassey has her number now. Madeline is trying to help and give Bette some guidance. Bette’s Alpha personality is crumbling as the guilt of her actions fully weigh on her shoulders. She needs to listen to Madeline and decide what is best for her. Good therapy only lets you see and feel your options. The real truth is following what is best for your heart and mind. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out as Tina was weel rebuked by Bette’s statement: ‘No… I’m not just ‘fucking’ your junior resident… I’m in a meaningful relationship with her… I think this is the one…’. Both gals are protesting a little too much for this not to hurt. Now I really cna’t wait to see where this all leads. I’lll be here ready to follow. Many, many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
Its so hard to realize that the air that you breathe,is the thing that keep you going and Bette did lose that supply line when she lost Tina. You wake up at night needing to find your life line and it gone. then you realize. You can’t breathe. thanks

Bette is ripping apart at the seams and no one but Schmidt seems to be noticing. The chapter was amazing and I truly hope that Bette goes after her air supply before she self-destructs some more.
