All or Nothing —- Part 7 —- Flesh and Blood
Bette felt all her insides turn to mush and her heart began to hurt at these beautiful words written down on paper. Tina, her beautiful Tina, still loved her and treasured her and wanted her near. This was the biggest gesture of unconditional love anyone, ever had given Bette and in her fragile emotional state she just couldnt take it.
I could fly into your eyes
that sweet stare could take me anywhere
I was just a bird, with no place to land
But you opened your heart
And you brought me there
Tina lay in bed, alone that night, feeling her heart taking itself on a rollarcoaster of fully fledged emotional turmoil. Why hadnt Bette come to see her? Where was she? Was she ok? Tina couldn’t believe what’d happened. She’d been hit by a car, how the bloody ***** had she not seen it? So many questions that needed answers, and to answer them, she needed Bette
Said if you could understand me
I could understand you
What am I afraid of
Please don’t let it get to you
Feel my conscience rising over my tongue
Bette awoke the next day, her eyes grainy with sleep. She’d slept? The last thing she remembered doing was curling up in Kits arms, the letter hugged tight to her chest. The letter from Tina, apologising to her, telling her that they were still together, forever. Bette scrambelled her hands around, trying to find its floaty paper. She was going to treasure it forever. Tina’s love for her expressed on paper.
“Welcome back to the land of the living” Kits voice came from above Bette, a slight laugh rippling through her voice. Bette rubbed her eyes, looking up from her hospital bed at her sister. Wait! Hospital bed? How the ***** had she gotten here?
“You fell asleep in the waiting room, you’ve been dead to the world for the last 13 or 14 hours Bette” Kit smiled, stroking her hair out of her eyes as Bette sat up. “Hungry yet?”
Bette felt her stomach growl ferociously, she was starving!
“Ravenous, but I need to do something first” Bette swung her legs out of bed, wanting to go and see Tina. Wanting to tell her that everything was okay, that they were okay.
Gotta ride this wave while I’m still young
I’ve been stuck inside myself for too long
You are where I belong
And if I run
Let me catch my breath until the fear is gone
Life without you would be like music without a song
Tina was asleep when Bette inched into the room, not wanting to upset her beautiful blonde in any way. She sunk into the chair beside her, unable to resist stroking Tina’s cheek gently, feeling its warmth and feeling reassured. She sat watching over Tina, watching her chest move with each breath as Tina smiled in her sleep before waking.
“Bette?” She asked croakily, moving so she could look into Bettes dark eyes.
“Yeah baby, I’m here, I’m here” Bette felt tears beginning to creep down her ashen cheeks, and turned away slightly, trying to wipe them away while Tina wasn’t noticing.
“Bette….I’m sorry” Tina started awkwardly, but was stopped by bette placing her index finger over Tina’s lips.
“No baby, I’m sorry, I’m sorry I did what I did, I’m sorry I wasn’t there, I’m sorry I made you walk out…” Bette felt the tears rush more viciously as she hid her head in her hands, feeling all the emotions from the past week days explode inside her. Tina reached out a shaky hand, reaching to comfort Bette. This small act of kindess touched Bette in a way that she’d never felt before. Here was her one, her only, her forever, sick in hospital and she was the one falling to pieces.
“T, I’m so sorry, this is all my fault, everything is, I’m the one who screwed up, and I screwed up royally, I ruined everything, and I nearly got you killed, god I fucked everything up!” Bette sobbed, letting all her emotions take over and leaving her feel like a right dickhead.
I felt safe as a sad old lie
Never too close to anyone
You pulled me in
and saved my life
Could’ve drifted right into the sun
Tina waited until Bettes crying had subsided slightly before gently peeling one of her hands away from her face and kissing it gently.
“Please don’t cry” Tina asked, still with a croaky voice. Bette gave her a half smile through the tears.
“I’m sorry, I completly fell to pieces then…I’m so sorry” Bette blushed slightly in embarrasment.
“Its alright, jesus Bette, when was the last time you ate something? Your stomachs grumbling 19 to the dozen” Tina joked slightly, pushing herself into a sitting up position.
Bette gave a watery half smile
“Its been a while, I wasn’t hungry” She gently took Tina’s hand, looking deep into Tina’s eyes to see her reaction. Tina just smiled, enjoying the feeling of Bettes warmth against her palm.
“T we need to talk” Bette blurted out quickly, not wanting to upset her wife, but needing to get her feelings known.
Said if you could understand me
I could understand you
What am I afraid of
Please don’t let it get to you
Feel my conscience rising our my tongue
Gotta ride this wave while I’m still young
I’ve been stuck inside myself for too long
You are where I belong
And if I run
Let me catch my breath until the fear is gone
Life without you would be like music without a song
Tina shook her head.
“Bette, you know I love you, you got my letter, you’re my home, the one I turn to, my north, south, east and west, my noon my midnight…Bette I love you with all my heart and thats never going to change” Tina said, bringing Bettes hand up her lips and kissing it gently.
“T, you know I love you just as much…can I please have a piece of paper?” Bette asked, feeling it would be easier to express her feelings on paper than right to Tina’s face, which was full of hope and love again, not the cold sleepiness that had filled it when she was in the coma. Tina passed her the paper and watched her wife scribble down something that she knew was going to touch her heart.
And I can’t live
And I can’t fly
Without you
Gotta ride this wave while I’m still young
I’ve been stuck inside myself for too long
You are where I belong
“Dear T,
God I don’t know what to write, I’ve never been a writer, but here goes nothing.
Tina, you’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, I knew that the first time I set eyes on you, all those long years ago.
You have been my rock, the one thats kept me grounded, and I know I’ve let you down many times, even if it was just small things, and for that I’m sorry. You truly stole my heart the first time I saw you and I will treasure that moment forever.
You are my flesh, my blood, my love, my one, my only…
You are my forever Tina Kennard
Love,
Bette”
And if I run
Let me catch my breath until the fear is gone
Life without you would be like music without a song
