    “Is dinner ready yet mommy “ Josh demanded as she walked through the living room – Dan and Josh were watching a movie while Zak was playing with his building blocks.

     

    “Six minutes “

    “Where’s Tina ? “ Danny asked

    “Coming over -”

    “We know — we’ll behave “ Dan said pulling at face at his two brothers

     

    “I am not asking you to act differently but I do want you to treat her with respect “

    “Tina your girlfriend “ Zak announced

     

    Bette lifted Zak up “ Yes – Tina is my girlfriend “

     

    “You kiss Tina “ he added

     

    Bette fixed Danny with a look

     

    “Just what have you been telling your brother ?”

    “Nothing – he must have heard “

    “If you have so much time to talk about my dates – it must mean that you have also done your English homework “

    “Kind of “

    “Care to explain that remark ?”

    “Not really – its Saturday mom “

     

     

    “Do you know how much teasing I get from Dana if my son’s English homework looks like a drunken spider has done the barn dance on the page ? “

    “Gee mom “

    “Gee mom yourself – will you please move some of Zak’s blocks before someone stands on them “

    “You mean Tina “

    “I mean anyone – especially anyone who hasn’t done his English homework “

    “What’s for dinner ? “ Josh asked looking up from his TV viewing

    “Chicken kebabs with rice “

    “Great – my favourite “

    Everything was Josh’s favourite – Bette was just about to continue her conversation with Dan when the door bell rang

    “That will be your girlfriend “ Dan said

     

    Bette considered if the kebabs would start burning if she wasn’t careful

     

    “Dan – would you answer the door – I need to check on dinner “

    “Okay “

     

    Bette put Zak down who waddled after Dan as she went into the kitchen just in time to turn the kebabs over and start the rice. She listened as her sons all greeted Tina – Bette concentrated on the voices – Dan was cool as always, Josh just adored Tina and it showed – Zak also made a fuss of Tina – Bette smiled – she really loved the blonde’s soft southern voice.

The simple pleasure of a family meal and time watching a DVD together was blissful. The magnificence is in the detail. The honesty and openness is apparent and adorable.
