Bette was standing behind the counter chatting with her father when Tina arrived.
"Hello Tina," Melvin greeted her approach.
"Hello Mr. Porter," Tina replied. "The lunch Bette sent to my office last week was fantastic. I had to come back for more."
"My dear girl, please call me Melvin," he said, shaking his head. "Mr. Porter was my father, not me. And every Wednesday, fresh turkey dinner is on the menu. You’re always welcome to join me, even if Bette isn’t available."
"That’s very kind of you. Bette suggested we get here at 11:30," Tina said. "I’m given to understand the place fills up."
"Lots of people longing for a home cooked meal, I guess," Melvin said.
"We’re right there," Bette gestured to a booth where she had already set a few papers. "Coffee?"
    "Yes please," Tina replied.
"And two turkey dinners, coming up," Melvin disappeared into the kitchen.
"How’s your week been?" Bette set their coffees down before seating herself. "Seems like forever since I talked to you."
"Pretty good," Tina replied. "I’m starting to get nervous about my court appearance."
"Your appearance in front of the highest court in the land? Where a portion of the population will be depending on you to argue successfully for their civil right to marry? Why would you be nervous?"
    "You’re not helping," Tina replied.
"If you’re not nervous, it’s not worth enough to you," Bette said. "Think of your anxiety as nature’s push to the finish line. As you approach the day of reckoning, you get that extra adrenaline rush that ensures you offer your best performance."
"Is that rush why you love being in a courtroom so much?"
"Just thinking about it fuels my anticipation," Bette said.
Tina narrowed her eyes at Bette and paused for a moment.
"I’m talking about the case, Bette."
    "Right. The case."
"Turkey dinner with all the fixins," Melvin said as he set their plates down. "Is there anything else I can get you two?"
"Thanks, this is great," Tina said.
"Thanks, Daddy," Bette reached to give his hand a squeeze.
And they enjoyed their meal together before departing back to each of their offices for a completely unproductive afternoon.
