Angelica’s Fifth Fourth ~ Chapter Ten

It was Tina and Bette’s turn to babysit the house’s children, allowing the other parents an evening of grown-up time.

After her inspection trip upstairs, Bette headed to join her aunt and partner after a brief stop in the kitchen.  She stepped on to the porch, her mouth full of barbeque potato chips she had pulled from the bag in her hand.  A bag of Double Stuff Oreos was tucked under her other arm.

“The Oreos now have so much more than I remembered,” was Bette’s greeting. “Oh, I gave Miles another half hour with her video games, then to bed,”

Aunt Grace’s voice reflected her incredulity, “Once, you named your children after family members or you might even pick someone you admired, hoping the name would inspire the child.  But a musician?” she shook her head. “‘Miles Davis Porter’?”

“Creative people can also be inspirational, Aunt Grace,” Bette reproved as she poured herself a glass of Tina’s homemade lemonade.

“Then I should be glad, for the child’s sake, that her parents aren’t fans of Thelonius Monk.”

As they all chuckled, Tina directed Bette to the lemon-flavored vodka, an optional addition to the cool drink.  Bette quickly glanced at her aunt.

“You are a grown woman.  You do not need my approval to have a drink,” Grace announced, having seen Bette’s glance. Bette was reaching towards the vodka when her aunt continued, “However, I have no intention of burdening myself with child care responsibilities if you both become inebriated.  For selfish reasons, I therefore will monitor the quantity of your intake.”

Bette pulled her hand back and sat down, her unenhanced glass of lemonade in her hand.

“Grace has been explaining why she still intimidates the Porter cousins.”

“My siblings and their children loved to visit.  The adults also loved to leave those children behind for the rest of the summer.  Nelson and I did not mind.  We loved a full house.  However, the only way to manage six to eight children of various ages, and their friends, was to terrify them enough that they would be too afraid to get into much trouble.”

“They are still afraid of you.”

Grace laughed, “Early impressions can last forever.”

    1. That’s what happens when a parent is too strict, Melvin. Bette used her brains to be a mischief. Poor Aunt Grace & Nelson though having to contend. I remember wild summers like that with friends creating mischief. PPS.

    2. ROTFLMAO!!!! What a great chapter. I love the fact that Bette was mischievous as a child. This chapter brought back fond memories of some of the stunts that my cousins and I accomplished. Thank you, I laughed until I had a stitch in my side and tears rolling down my face. PPVS

    3. Aunt Grace stopping Bette from having the vodka served more than one purpose, I think for which Tina and Bette will be grateful, and it led to something way more enjoyable anyway. Oh to have seen young Bette… takes a creative mind to be that naughty. They can only hope that Angie puts her creativity to better use! This was a great, very funny chapter, and I can’t wait for the next one. Thanks, Spumoni!

    4. Oh gosh, those childhood stories bring back happy memories of my youth. I ordered all kinds of stuff from the back of comic books. This was a very fun chapter to read, it was great fun to learn that Bette had such a naughty summer vacation for years w/o her father knowing and her awesome aunt never told on her for most of it. Aunt Grace wasn’t so bad after all. It’s obvious she loves Bette still and now Bette’s family. Loved the chapter. PPS
