Chapter 1- Prelude to Pleasantries
Alex woke up under the highway overpass. She immediately felt the sting of the open wound on her forearm where the man’s knife had cut her last night. Soon the bruises on her wrists started to throb as well. She reached behind her to her back pack. She zipped it open. The bag was full of stuff she bought over the past 4 months: band-aids, tensors, instant-ice, some food, and a sewing kit. She pulled out the sewing kit and opened it. She took out a needle and some thread, then threaded the needle. After tying the end, she got ready for pain as she stuck out her arm. She gritted her teeth as she felt the needle pierce her skin. She pulled the thread through, closing the cut. She looped it in and out of her skin a few more times, re-sewing the skin back together. Finally she bit the end of thread and tied it, making sure it wouldn’t come un-done. She took a deep breath and let her sweater’s sleeve fall down on it again. She then lifted her pant leg, revealing a previous sew job on her ankle, which she had cut jumping a fence a couple weeks ago. She inspected it, then went into her sewing kit and pulled out the tweezers. She lowered the tweezers to the cut and started to pull each stitch out.
Carmen woke up. She smiled when she looked over at Shane. She had really popped in the 4 months. The pregnancy had gone smooth, well about a month after Alex had run away. That first month was tough on Shane, she was still having a rough time, but she’s settled down for the baby. They just found out yesterday that it was a girl. Carmen smiled widely as Shane stirred and cuddled into her chest. Carmen kissed the top of her head and pulled her in close. She looked straight ahead at the picture of their family on the wall. She stared intently at her daughter. It was her birthday last week. Alex was now 17. Alice threw her a birthday party… it felt more like a funeral. In reality, they didn’t know if she was still even alive. But Carmen couldn’t bare to hold that thought. Shane was certain she was still alive. She claimed Alex was tough enough to survive out there. She just really hoped that she had steered clear of Harry.

BOUT TIME!!!
wow you really make Alex suffer! poor thing. I hope Dana Helps her soon and she sees that she can go back home where she belongs. Nice to see you back writing! Post soon.
Its good
I’ll admit it’s ‘fun’ to relive Shane’s past through Alex, but the logic behind Alex’s reasoning is a bit screwed. You probably intended it that way but I’m looking forward to the day it hits her like a ton of bricks that she needs to go home and give her parents a chance. But then again, why are Shane and Carmen not looking for her? Hell, they should have some word from somewhere that ‘Shane’ is out tricking on the streets. Okay, rant over, I liked this post…it’s ‘fun’ in a bad way. I almost feel guilty…almost. PPS :)
Dana needs to guide Alex back to Alice, and Alex back to Shane & Carmen. Love the story!!!
