Art of Love – Chpt 2

    Previously

I took a deep breath to relax myself. “Well, did Edouard have someone interested in buying it or something?”

“Apparently. Someone who attended the Pince Gallery opening, that night we were there, must have told this particular collector about my painting. He mentioned it was a senator. I can’t remember her name. A female. One who collects Abstract Expressionism. I think Edouard said she came into the gallery today,” Helena said indifferently, placing her fork across her plate.

    My eyes grew wide.

“Was it Barbara Grisham?” I asked quietly, removing a stray strand of hair from my face.

“I believe that’s right,” Helena said, looking at me inquisitively. “Do you know her?”

    “We’ve met,” I answered.

    Chapter 2

Bette appeared to be quite uncomfortable. My elbow on the table, I propped up my head with two fingers at my temple and eyed her intently. Bette looked away.

    “Just ‘met’?” I asked.

Bette quietly stared at the souvenir seashell I kept on the table as a reminder of the spectacular first Saturday we’d spent together, the Saturday I’d asked her to move in with me at the beach house.

She reached to pick up the conch. I watched her caress it with the thumb of the same hand with which she held it.

    “Bette?” I observed her face.

“Yes?” she said, continuing to look down at the shell.

I removed my fingers from my temple and placed my hand over hers, the one that held the shell.

“Bette, is there something you want to tell me?” I asked quietly.

    She shook her head.

Silence hung in the air for several minutes. I pulled my hand away from hers and waited in vain for a verbal response.

“Bette, what’s going on with you?” I finally asked again, growing increasingly concerned.

Bette remained still. I waited for an answer that did not come.

“Are you going to talk to me?” I said.

My prodding was doing nothing to stir her. Bette remained mute.

“Fuck!” I screamed, standing up from the table abruptly.

    Bette didn’t look up.

Having become utterly exasperated, I walked to the bar and poured a double neat Scotch for myself. I took a generous sip and turned around, leaning back against the counter with my drink in my hand. I looked at Bette, who continued to sit there silently holding and staring at that precious seashell. My seashell. The one she’d rescued from a sand burial and gave to me. Gazing down into my glass, I felt sad, sorrowful that Bette couldn’t talk to me.

    1. Zheese, once again, thank you soooo much for sharing for wonderful story with us. This was indeed so great ! You are so gifted ! I can’t even find words to describe how fantastic I think your style is. Anyway, I truly loved this chapter.

    2. Shouldn’t that be “Butt of course”? Wow, the senator didn’t have the goods? Kind of surprising, but nice to have these two on an even keel. But Bette needs to keep working on her communication skills, it shouldn’t take Helena screaming obscenities to get her to open up.

    3. I for one don’t think Bette has anything to apologize or feel contrite for. She was single. The Senator and her husband had an arrangement. And it was in the past. I think her only regret should have been that *we* didn’t get to see the interaction play out on our television screen ;)

    4. “It’s easier for me to express myself with sex,” With that sentence you have summarized three years of watching Bette Porter and not quite figuring her out. This is so profund. Thanks for continuing your story. Its our gain.

    5. I love the Senator w/Bette. I also like your story of Bette w/Helena. A dilemma for me. You write so well that it does provide a dilemma for me. Who to root for??

    6. I am so glad you ventured out from under your rock, I sent on an antsy search party for the Belena/Helebette writers on the MB. Somehow you were under the radar, but I see the tear gas worked… or this is an awesome coinkidink (or coincidence…you say potato, I say potatoe)!! I decided to read much of your story over again and I was not at all disappointed. Thanks for your post. I am quite enjoying this story.

    7. So glad you showed back up with this. Its good to see that without arguing Helena is able to get Bette to talk to her, a problem her and Tina always had. You gotta love the the two alphas together, cos you just know that anyone who tries to get between them is in for some definite ass kicking.
