I am all alone this time around
Sometimes on the side I hear a sound
Places parallel I know it’s you
Feel the little pieces bleeding through….
It’s the day of the race.
I left Carmen warm and soft in our hotel room. She wasn’t on duty till noon and I didn’t see the point in saying goodbye. I met up with Jeff and got my gear, water, radio in my helmet checked out ok, my bike was ready to go. It was one of those Honda dirt bikes there was a backup on the truck just incase. We mapped out our pit times, short cuts and we figured we had 12 hours to chart the desert and finish. The 1000 wasn’t about winning or losing it was about finishing. But the incentive was there, win and get their undivided attention; loose and this keeps going. So I wanted to win.
I didn’t think about Carmen as I got on my bike. I didn’t think about Carmen when I put my helmet on, when I tested the water flow, when I checked my radio. When the starter pistol clicked in place and we got the green to go, she didn’t enter into my head. When four hours into the race and I cut across the sand dunes into the beach area, when I looked back and realized that my competition was out of my site, when the darkness came and moon shone big and bright, when Jeff checked in with my lap times, when I crossed the first of 5 check points, when the spectators seemingly jumped out of nowhere, when the roads split and I made my own choice to go neither left nor right but instead straight cause Jeff didn’t get back to me fast enough, I still didn’t think of Carmen. I couldn’t.
I had a race to win.
When I noticed the hole in the road, the craters really, when the silk, which is just fine smooth sand more like dust, when I entered the silk and it flooded my vision, got under my helmet into my nose, my eyes. I didn’t think of her.

i really like your stories and the music you put into them rocks. keep it up.
Damn! The shit they go through almost give me fuckin’ heart attacks. Luv that they met at the costume party. Shane’s costume …Hilarious. Just like Carmen to pick a Scully outfit, always the sarcastic one. Wonderful chaps, Great story.
i realise that I forgot to comment for a long time. What else can I say, i love this story… love love!
Oh, Christ, that was exciting. Right when the “armed gunmen” crashed the party, I felt like I was watching the entire debacle while that mechanical music from that movie Resident Evil hammered in the foreground (you know, in the beginning of the first movie when the people in the black get-ups raid the mansion–something exactly like that). It had my little heart pounding like crazy! And Carmen dressed as an FBI agent. . . the woman has a huge pair. How do they even fit in that pantsuit of hers? (It was always the pantsuit when Scully was on the field, and the skirt was for the office. You remember that?) Fan-fuckin’-tastic update!
I would love to see Shane in the basic instinct get up! Carmen seems to like living on the edge just as much as Shane. Off to read your last chap of La Mer.. Thanks for the update!
