“Preston Carter. Why am I not surprised to see you here?”

Tina gave her friend a quick once-over. He was looking every part the Southern gentleman, adorned in a linen suit. White starched shirt and striped tie in place, despite the heat.

They had arrived early. Marian had said she wanted no help. More specifically, the caterers did not need assistance. Bette had taken Angelica to use the restroom. Rather than hang around where the lunch buffet was being set up, Tina sought out a quiet, shaded area near the back of the expansive lawn and far from the crowds.

Preston was already ensconced in this zone of solitude when she arrived.

“An unexpected delight, I should hope.” He was at ease, always.

With the familiarity of the interchange, Tina’s smile became more genuine although she was also feeling a growing sense of frustration. “I’m afraid my mother has you here under false pretenses.”

“Does that mean I won’t be served a fine luncheon?” He patted the seat next to him on the glider. “Now, have a seat and tell me what the disagreement is about this time.”

    “This time? It’s definitional.”

    “Definitional?”

“My mother takes a rather limited interpretation of the word ‘gay.’”

“So, I take it her version does not mean ‘happy’?”

“When it comes to her daughter, no.”

“And I am to be the virile male to steer you from your errant ways, I suppose.”

“That’s my guess.” Tina gave a shrug. “I’m sorry if I wasted your afternoon.”

“My darling,” he began, putting on the drawl to great effect and casually putting an arm on the back bench behind Tina. “I find that time spent in the company of a beautiful woman is never time wasted.”

“And I find you just as full of horseshit as ever,” she returned, giving him a light tap on the leg.

“Besides. Given that I am such a fine strapping display of manhood, you may someday need someone such as myself for, how can I put this delicately? For my manly prowess.”

    “Prowess?”

“As I understand it, women similarly situated in relationships such as yours often find themselves in need of a man for his procreative capacity.”

    1. It was the one purposeful mistake that Tina followed thru on to break Bette. Time for Tina to own up to her faults and let Bette feel some security in the fact that she does want her. Now on the flip side Bette needs to take it down a notch and be willing to talk things out, I think she may be in that place and that will hopefully keep the trouble from blowing up completely.

    2. Why was I thinking of Tennessee Williams? Pitch-perfect dialogue, of course! And the usual push and pull between Tina and Bette. Angelica is adorable and terribly two, of course! Thanks!

    3. I love this story, but wish that they would talk more….they both need to verbalize what they’re thinking and feeling…T cutting B off like that seemed kinda harsh, let’s remember it does take B awhile to open up, plus she also probably realized the family luncheon isn’t exactly the time or place to get into that discussion….aagh, anyway, I also hope that they can get on the same page soon!

    4. How much do I love this story? So much. Sigh. Maybe I’m the only one, I see forward progress here. Slowly but surely. Love all the details, all the characters. Thank you, Pseud.

    5. Yowch, when Tina takes a stance she means it, doesn’t she? I think they need to have A Talk, cos at least one of them’s got some trust issues. Not talking was one of the many mistakes from last time round, hopefully they can avoid it this time, and not start putting walls up. Thanks and do post soon, pseud.

    6. Wow, Tina is being very harsh with Bette. She’s tried to explain things to Tina, tried to show her that she’s changing, but she’s not getting a lot of enthusiasm from Tina. Yes, Bette is showing some trust issues, but maybe that would go away if they just talked…why do they never do this???? Wonderful story Pseud and great update!

    7. Great to see another installment of this story. Your well-chosen words lend much to its development. More when you can would be appreciated.

    8. Aw, come on I’d have been a bit taken back if I had walked in on that situation. Tina needs to cut Bette a little bit of slack and visa versa.

    9. Awww, Bette can’t seem to catch a break here. I am so glad to see this story. It seems Bette and Tina take a step forward and then two steps back, then maybe two forward and then one back. They seem to remain in the same plain as they were when Bette showed up at the same hotel. I hope that they are able to get into some sort of even playing field soon.
