Before the Fall

“Whoa. Hey. Hi. What are you doing here?” James asked looking startled to see Bette in the gallery.
“I work here, right?” Bette asked smiling slightly at James.
“Um…yeah. Of course. I’m just–it’s great to see you Bette,” James said with a grin hesitating a moment before he wrapped his arms around her.
Bette stiffened slightly but then relaxed into the embrace even returning it.
“Have you remembered anything?” James asked as he stepped back. He was grinning now, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Bette shrugged watching James as he tried to rein in his excitement.
“Little bits of things,” Bette said vaguely.
“Well that’s better than nothing. So what are you doing here? Ready to get back to work?”
“I just stopped by to pick up some things, go over some stuff, and get reacquainted with things here. How’s it been going lately?”
“Well, you run a tight ship, Bette. Things have been going really smoothly. Nothing out of the ordinary has gone on. Want me to go up with you?” James asked eagerly.
“No thanks. I’m going to wander around a bit. Thank you, James. For everything. I really appreciate it.”
James stared at her a moment before he ducked his head and grinned even wider.
“No worries, boss.”
With another smile Bette nodded her head and turned wandering off.
Step one, Bette reminded herself. Be nicer to James. He had been with her for years and it was clear to her now that he really enjoyed working for her. She wasn’t quite sure why, but she had always assumed he stayed around for the money and the acclaim. She had never considered the fact that he might actually enjoy working with her.
That he might simply like her.
She had kept herself so closed off that she only saw people through a cynical eye. Thinking that everyone was out to push an angle trying to get something from her.
“So what are we looking at?”
“We are looking at an avant-garde Art Nouveau artist by the name of Hanns Franklin. It’s reminiscent of Gustav Klimt’s paintings in that it too uses the female body in a way that evokes the mind with its blatant eroticism.”

let me be the first to say–faaaantastic! you’re developing this story in such amazing ways. i loved how you took away the jodi factor and gave us back carmen. heh. clever, you are. helena shouldn’t take no crap from bette, but bette is such a lovable control freak…they just have to reunite. pps:)

i feel like i’ve just had a refreshing coca-cola…ahhhhhh…that was good…what will helena say, will she open the letter, will she say bette do like a banana and split, will she go running like the lady in the harlequin novels, whatever she does, let her do it soon…hint-hint, please post soon..really enjoy your story.
You put the 17 Reasons Why sign to much better use than IC did. How can Helena resist contrite Bette? That letter better not go astray!

Aww, this chapter was great. So cute! I’m glad that in losing her memory and getting it back, Bette doesn’t see the point of denying her love for Helena anymore. Alice is so hilarious, and Dana is always cute of course. Post soon, Speedy. ;)

I’m with rufus.I’m anxious now about what will happen with that letter. Will it actually get to Helena and how will she receive it. Is it to much too little too late. I hope not.The banter between Alice and Bette is so on spot. Greaet uptake. PPS
