Bette — Plan B; pt. 50
But what if waiting was the wrong thing to do? What if the girl was really in danger? Should I contact the police now, so that they could get working on things quickly?
Back at the softball field, there was no one around. I hoped I might run into someone who could verify if Jess had been in school or not, and who she might hang out with. That is, if someone would give such information to a complete stranger.
That was a moot point in any case, though, as there was no one to ask.
I slowly walked back to the car, running various scenarios through my mind. It didn’t appear that there was anything in Jess’s conversations of yesterday or today that would indicate that she planned to skip school, or even skip softball. Certainly no clue that she planned to bolt.
Dammit.
It’s a wonder my pacing didn’t wear a hole into the floor. I was beside myself, back and forth about who to call and when. Just as I was about ready to give it up, and start with
Going out on the patio, I saw her helping someone into her room through the window. Then she saw me. Her eyes widened.
You’d better believe you’re busted young lady.
“Jess.” I tried to keep my voice in control, and not let her know either how angry or how frightened I was.
She just put on a stern face and marched right past me, back to her room. The whole march was punctuated by a door slam.
A small bit of me is breathing a sigh of relief that she’s okay. The rest of me is ready to kill her.
I went back and knocked on her door.
“Go away.”
That much was expected. As was the fact that the door was locked.
Not that the locked door meant much. I’ve heard her mother doesn’t allow her to lock her door, and is an expert at picking the house’s locks. Well, Jessica Kennard, meet the woman who taught your mother that trick.
It only took me a moment to find what I needed, and I was back at the door. Given how she was going to try to sneak in, I didn’t want to give her any advance warning as I didn’t want her to sneak out.
Instead I picked the lock and entered. Jess was seated at her desk typing on the computer. Her friend was on the bed, and looked very upset. Jess herself looked mad at the intrusion, but also off in a way that I didn’t quite understand.
“You were supposed to meet me at 4:30.”
Jess remained working on the computer. “I was busy.”
The friend was still sniffling, trying not to cry. Acting on instinct, I grabbed a tissue from a box on Jess’s dresser and handed it to her, sitting beside the girl. “Are you all right?”
“She’s fine.”
The girl threw her arms around my neck and burst out into a loud barrage of sobs. She most certainly was not fine.
Time to go for a softer approach. Whatever is up with these girls, it has both of them very upset. “Jess, please, let me know what’s going on. Let me help you.”
Her eyes narrowed. “We don’t need your help.”
The sobbing girl tightened her grip. Might as well go to the source; I have a feeling, or maybe it’s hope, that Jess is a collateral part of all of this.
“Sweetie, are you okay?”
“You can ignore her, Jeri.”
So, this is Jess’s friend Jeri.
“Jeri? Honey? What’s wrong?”
Over Jess’s stern look, the girl took a deep breath and prepared to speak.

wow i’m the first. hmmm what the heck is going on. jess needs to lighten up and be a bit more responsible. bette seems to be doing a good job of not freaking out, just yet. and why is jeri crying. aahhh too much drama. be kind please. loved this chapter. post soon.
There is a part of me that is really beginning to loathe Jess. Teenage or not – she’s deceitful, rude, and disrepectful. I’m worried that Jess has solicited Jeri as an accomplice in some scheme to make Bette a pawn in some untruth that will be the undoing of Tina and Bette. Even if Jeri truly is in need of help Jess should have known that Bette would be worried if she didn’t answer at least one of her pages. What made Jess think that Bette wouldn’t go directly to Tina when she didn’t show up on time? However, Bette too has some culpability in that she really needs to bring the hammer down and set some serious boundries with real consequences.
In any event…another great chapter. Thanks for posting, it makes a long weekend even more enjoyable!
I am loving your story. Can’t wait for each post. I’m really starting to loathe Jess. She’s totally disrespectful. I realize she’s a teenager, but she needs to start showing some responsibility.
This was a turn I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know where you are going but I am enjoying the ride. Thanks.
Why is Jess in the driver’s seat? They need to get her in check.
Thanks.
What the hell is going on!
Strange how Jess can be like Bette and Tina at the same time. Next chapter, please.
jess is such a bbbb
ok enough, its time for Jess to come to terms with Bette. She can’t change the situation so get used to it and maybe she’ll learn something. Teenagers can be a pain….but they eventually come around most times.
P I think I forgot to tell you how fucking gifted you are at writing this very very awesome story. And I know how busy you are and you still take the time to write to you I SAY THANK YOU, maybe I should bake you some cookies or something.
Has anyone seen or heard from the real Bette Porter??? she is sliping. P let me tell you way this story is so awesome, it reminds me all the time to never ever have kids. Yep let’s see how Jess pulls another nice fuzzy wool cover over Bette’s eyes. The reason has to be good if Jess missed a softball game, I could see skipping practice but a game. Well in my eyes that would be un heard of but maybe Jess dosen’t like playing softball as much as I though.
K
Great chapter. This kid is tough. I feel bad for Bette lol.
Oh, Pseud, it’s so unlike you to leave us with cliffhangers…cough cough….I guess I remembered wrong!
What’s the drama….what’s with Jeri? Did she do something foolish?
Don’t let the bon bons slow your writing!
Thanks for writing this holiday weekend.
oh can’t wait for the next chapter. Excellent thanks
I haven’t been around to comment for a few chapters, but I’m catching up again. Jess…seriously, she’s transitioned from being curious about who Bette was to being a real brat. Is Tina going to lay down the law about her attitude soon? I know teenagers can be annoying, but it shouldn’t go unchallenged…I really enjoy this story a lot; Jess is so real it makes me want to ground her myself…I can’t help but think of the trouble I would have been in if I pulled her stunts…oh, I’d still be grounded…
Jess needs a kick in the ass… and i hope tina gives it to her… she could of at least called bette back.. or tex message… something… she was wrong and then to climb in the window and then slam the door… oh no… bette needs to tell tina and tina needs to straighten that kid out… anything could of happened to her and then bette would have been blamed…and i don’t care what excuse jess gives bette… there is no good excuse
