Bliss From Tragedy – Chapter 9

Bette felt her body collapse against the seat of her car; she fought back the new surge of tears her eyelids were heaving. Her head turned when she head Tina’s voice, only to be taken aback for her sudden loss of words. The tears teetered again, this time more loosely as a few dabbed the brunette’s made up face. Then just as it seemed hope was lost, Tina reached over to her  she hadn’t had a distinct feeling of security until she felt Tina’s hand resting upon hers. It gave her a serene sense of self; almost as if she said it was okay to let go but also to hold back. Bette viewed her comfort as giving without a shred of restraint, as if she opened herself entirely for Bette to take what she needed.

The burial went as fast as the service; it was just as blurry for Bette. Although the scenery had changed, one thing remained constant and that was the beautiful and faithful Tina. She stood by her for the entirety of it, even for the small talk of old friends and colleagues, she was there for the non-existent conversation that seemed to be repeated with everyone. Tina never failed to extended her hand and take it upon herself to be pleasant and anchoring for Bette

She told herself it was her sympathy and empathy for Bette and the situation that kept her right there, at least that is what she would tell Eric when she was asked to explain her consistently “ignoring” his calls to her cell phone. She had slipped it on silent while Bette was talking to Mrs. Lee briefly to the side.

Bette had every intention of saying something to Tina as they headed back to Tina’s car. She knew she needed to, that she had to show some sort of thanks for everything this woman had done, for how amazing she handled Bette which seemed to her, almost like instinct. They made it back to the vacant lot as she pulled next to Tina’s car; she put her car in park and turned it off. She mustered her thoughts enough to turn to Tina, only to find her not there
