Boundaries – Chapter 23
Shane: Invisible.
Mark: Bitter.
Dana: Dependably supportive.
Mark: One word!
Dana: Dependable.
Alice: Distant.
Mark: Bette, what about you?
Bette: What about me? What?
Shane: Describe your dad; one word.
Bette: Dying.
***
Bette: I just had to get him out of the hospital. It was killing him.
Kit: Cancer’s killing him. Do you have any idea what you are taking on? Are you prepared to watch our father die right here in your living room?
Bette: He could go into remission Kit. Don’t put him in the ground quite yet.
Kit: He’s refusing treatment.
Bette: His doctors give him four to six weeks. I give him as long as he wants to stay alive.
Kit: And what about work?
Bette: Don’t worry about work Kit I just want to make sure that Daddy’s set up. I’ll figure something out.
Kit: I don’t think you know what you are in for. This is going to eat you alive.
Bette: I didn’t know that I would be taking it on all by myself.
Kit: Then you should have talked to me. You should have included me in this huge decision you made about how our father is going to leave this earth.
***
Bette: Come in.
Shelly: Hi.
Bette: Oh thank God you’re here. Can you figure out how to hook that thing up?
Shelly: Oh, yeah sure. Is there anywhere I can …
Bette: Oh there’s a spare bedroom around the corner, at the end of the hallway.
Shelly: OK.
Shelly is the nurse that Bette has hired to care for her father at home. She walks to the
bedroom to put her things away and sees that it’s set up as a nursery. She drops her things then joins Bette in the living room where they are setting up the hospital bed in anticipation of Melvin’s arrival.
Shelly: I see you have a baby.
Bette: No. Not yet. Maybe … I mean yes in 10 days… My ex, she’s due in 10 days.
Shelly: You have a lot on your plate.
Bette: That’s nothing new to me.
Shelly: Have you thought about what’s going to happen if your father’s still alive when the baby is born?
Bette: He will be.
***
Bette: Hi James it’s me. Can you call my father’s housekeeper and have her send my father’s family photographs? Just have her overnight them to me. OK. OK great thanks.

Thanks for the update. I think Alice caused a lot of problem and never was held accountable for most of it. Thanks for the update
wkm – I agree about Alice. In this story she will be made accountable to some extent.
First off BETTE didn’t see a reason to impose boundaries on her father bcuz TINA never voiced a complaint.BETTE laid down the law to ALICE when it concerned TINA and her but she should have seen that too.Having an ex-lover and new lover friendly is a death bell to any relationship becuz with ALICE, she didn’t leave the relationship she had with BETTE so being friends with TINA kept her in close contact with BETTE and nobody was thinking anything of it..Kit set hers with MELVIN she just left and tried to tell BETTE but she was in that trying to please mode.TINA allowed ALICE a prime spot in between her and BETTE without realizing BETTE left ALICE for her and whatever ALICE knew BETTE didn’t.ALICE has a hard time letting go but puts up the facade as being over it but she’s not.Same problem DANA had with LARA/ALICE and TONYA/ALICE.TINA needs to consider what is the purpose of having ALICE/HELENA as friends when these friends do not respect her or BETTE’s relationship.thanks
dunnthat – you are spot on with your observations once again. Unfortunately for Tina she will face some consequences as a result of her loyalty to Helena. Alice will also be revealed for what she is.
Hey Bat, just caught up with your last posts to this story. Sorry but due to the time difference I am not always able to comment on each chapter as you often posted more than one before I am able to read.
When I remember correctly there was a huge discussion about Bette and Melvin’s relationship and her behavior towards Tina when Melvin was around. And I too didn’t like it, but as you also let Paul state in your story, Tina’s an adult – she had a choice in accepting Bette’s behavior and Melvin’s treatment of her or she could have put her foot down. She made a conscious choice to just let both of them treat her the way they did, but resented Bette for not defending her and their relationship against her father, knowing that Bette always feared that her father could leave her at any moment as he did with Kit’s mother, her own mother and Kit.
One thing I also never really understood was Tina telling everyone or better put everyone surmising that Tina didn’t have any money when she left Bette after discovering her affair with Candace. She herself is telling Joyce ‘I made pretty good money as a development executive but not as much as Bette and she insisted on paying the mortgage.’ So why wouldn’t she have any of that money left, and in addition ‘If I needed money in my checking account I just took it from savings. I was authorized on the account. I never had to ask her for anything.’ why not use it now to get a place to stay until she comes to an understanding with Bette be it a divorce or working out something. But again Tina makes the conscious decision to seek refuge with Alice of all of their friends. Why – because in my opinion she is very well aware of the fact that Alice would be the one of their friends who wouldn’t question her but instead would contribute in her quest to make Bette the sole one responsible for all that went wrong in their relationship – just my opinion.
Sorry for getting carried away again, but to quote Bette ‘I just cannot help it’ that’s just what reading your stories does to me.
I also cannot help but to repeat how grateful I am to you for writing this extraordinary story and for re-posting it. By the way it’s the 3rd time reading it for me, but that doesn’t change anything. It’s like with a great book or a good movie – you never tire to go back to reading or watching it.
as1219 – don’t worry if you can’t comment on every chapter. I just appreciate that you are reading this story again and providing such great insight.
Tina acting like she was destitute didn’t make any sense to me either. Not sure how much a baby costs or perhaps she spent all their savings on the insemination? Who knows.
What was also interesting is that when Franklin fired Bette he told her that she would be financially compensated and should have enough to fall back on until she found another job so why was she selling off her artwork for money? Prior to being fired Bette was talking to Kit about helping her to finance the loan for the Planet. She was also willing to provide for Tina and pay for her living expenses when they broke up. Didn’t Bette offer $10,000 in cash when they were talking to lawyers?
Both Bette and Tina were acting as if they were overextended in the first six months of Angie’s life. What I found to be interesting is how they recovered so dramatically a year or so later when they got back together. Granted they were both working but Bette was driving a Lexus SUV, they renovated their house adding square footage, they were trying to get Angie in some exclusive private school, they were looking to adopt another baby. Money didn’t seem to be an issue at all and they had to be spending tens of thousands; especially in California.
That’s part of the reason why I made Bette well-off in this story. She has money and she has property from Melvin’s estate. She is more than capable of taking care of her family.
You guys make it very difficult to me to comment:P and in a good way.
I could’nt have word it any better. So i bow respectfully my head for dunnthat and as1219!
Thanks for the update!
Hi Bibi28 – Thank you for commenting. I appreciate you reading. I love it when readers express their thoughts, and perspectives, and ideas. It’s a great encouragement and it also inspires and gives me a lot to think about so even if someone has said it already I wouldn’t mind if you add your thoughts too.
I love all the detail that you’ve interwoven in this story. Are you a therapist? I ask b/c the psychological explanations that you offer in the story are professional, thorough, so complete from many angles. Fantastic writing! Tina is a peacemaker and may have gone along w/Bette’s behavior especially the dealings w/Melvin b/c Tina didn’t want to rock the boat or embarrass Bette in front of her Dad. She swallowed BS for so long that she finally had enough and exploded. Typical passive-aggressive behavior. Perhaps she thought Bette would see the light and reprimand her Dad concerning his behavior towards Tina. But it never happened b/c Bette never wanted to upset her Dad, she only sought his approval. Calling Melvin “Daddy” instead of “Dad” indicated that Bette was immature in her dealings w/Melvin.
Today I will try to leave updated
this story.
Has a saying that tells us so: “Two heads,
They are better than one “.
Bette and Tina allowed chaos to come into their lives,
and which led them to the edge of a cliff almost no return,
Bette and Tina were silent, hidden in a complete failure
with one another.
But how well Paul said, you have to stop competition
to know who else suffered pain, you have to work
together to move forward.
The complete constellation.
