    Breaking silence

Bette never met Barbara and Mitchell Kennard, but they still managed to make a disastrous first impression. She and Tina had been seeing each other for over a month, and they were completely giddy and drunk from the joy they brought each other. Bette arrived at Tinas apartment for dinner one evening and found her typically ebullient lover distant, distracted, and clearly very troubled about something. After no small amount of prodding from Bette, Tina haltingly explained that she’d called her parents to share the happy news of their relationship and instead of unconditional acceptance, her revelation was met with threats and ultimatums and anger.

Tina had been inconsolable, and Bette sat up with her, holding her close and drying her tears until she finally cried herself to sleep. Bette wasnt completely surprised with the Kennards reaction, but she was nevertheless furious with their response. So when Tina made the decision shortly thereafter to cut herself off completely from her parents, Bette supported her without question.

The first holidays were the most difficult. Tina had always been close to her family, and their absence in her life during those significant celebrations was keenly felt. Tina remained in touch with her brother, and she and Bette surrounded themselves with good friends who loved and supported them, but it was hard and painful and sad.

Were building a new family, Bette assured her grieving wife. And some day when were ready, well be the kind of parents we wish wed had.

Ironically, it was when they found out they were going to be parents that Bette began wondering whether they should make another effort with the Kennards. Especially after her own father refused to acknowledge their baby as his grandchild, Bette was worried that their son would grow up feeling adrift and lonely without any extended family to belong to. But there hadnt been time for any such reconnection to happen. They lost their baby suddenly, almost as soon as he came into their lives, and there was no opportunity to mend fences or build bridges on his behalf. That night they clung to each other, lost in the blackest, deepest isolation Bette had ever known, the only sound in the room Tinas primal mothers cries. And there was no one else to comfort them, no one who understood, no one to bear witness.

As she parked in front of the house, Bette thought back to that particular, shattering heartache, and all of the heartaches that followed in those long, horrible months before she and Tina had reunited and welcomed Jordan into their lives. She knew that it was nothing short of miraculous that things worked out the way they had. Nothing short of a blessing that Tina was once again by her side and that their child, their beautiful daughter, had been born healthy and whole. God, fate, and Tina gave Bette the invaluable gift of a second chance. And she reveled in it, honored it, and promised to be grateful and mindful of it forever. Maybe at some point Tinas seemingly bottomless well of generosity could bear the sharing of that gift with two others who had failed her.

T? Bette called, coming through the front door and tossing down her brief case.

Were out back, Baby, came the reply.

Bette walked out to the deck and found Tina and Jordan sitting in the garden. Tinas golden hair was pulled back in a loose pony tail, and the yellow-orange ball of sun overhead was the exact same color as the garland of flowers woven loosely around Jordans neck. Jordan reached up for Bette, her face a perfect portrait of delight, and Bette bent to lift her, raising her daughter as close to heaven as she could reach.

After your short stories it is wonderful to see you writing a serial again.
You have managed to tug at all our heartstrings; relationships between parents and children are never simple but always emotional. This story captures these feeling perfectly.
This tale has opened up a different, unexplored chapter in Bette and Tina’s lives. Adore the way you have continued your previous work in this story. Jordan is a blessing and hopefully can be the gift that brings Tina and her parents together again. Life is short and we need to focus on friends and family to make it worthwhile.
Glad to be on this journey with you.
      Awaiting your next chapter.
      A Fan.
