    Breaking silence

Mmmmmm, Bette cooed, guiding a spoonful of strained peaches to Jordan’s open mouth. Isn’t that good?

Jordan gurgled in response, raising her arms and waving them above her head.

Have you tasted that? Tina asked, refilling her coffee cup.

    The peaches? No. Why?

They actually aren’t bad. Not as good as the apricots, but not bad.

Bette kissed a dollop of stray peaches from Jordan’s cheek. Much better than that green stuff.

The green stuff is peas. And I can’t even get you to eat them when I put them on your plate, Tina said, shaking her head as she continued reading the Sunday paper.

One more bite, Jordan. One more, Bette grinned, turning her attention back to her daughter. Can you say ‘Mmmmmmmmmm’? Mmmmm. Monet.

Most mothers would be perfectly content if their child’s first word was Mama. Or even Ma.

Most children aren’t as smart as she is, Bette said, scooping the baby out of her high chair so she could clean her face and hands.

    What was your first word?

Antidisestablishmentarianism, Bette replied, over her shoulder.

    Tina snorted without looking up.

    Fine. It was book.

Not Rembrandt? Not Cassatt? Tina teased.

What was your first word, Smarty Pants?

I don’t know, Tina shrugged. I never asked.

    You never asked?

I figured it was Mama or Ma. Or antidisestablishmentarianism.

You could ask, you know, Bette said, kissing the top of Jordan’s head before putting her into Tina’s outstretched arms.

Bette. Tina’s tone was a quiet warning.

    I’m only saying, Bette replied.

Tina drew Jordan close. I know what you’re saying. And you already know how I feel about it.

She’s their granddaughter. The only grandchild they have. And they’re the only grandparents she has left, Bette said quietly, stroking a light fingertip along Jordan’s smooth round cheek.

    We’ve been through this.

No. We haven’t. You issued an edict and I agreed to it. But this isn’t only about you-or us-anymore. There’s someone else involved.

Tina sighed and deposited Jordan in her playpen. So we’re supposed to subject our baby to their prejudice and judgment? Isn’t it enough that they completely rejected us?

    It’s been years, T. Almost 10.

I know exactly how long it’s been, Tina said wearily.

People change, Baby, Bette said, staring pointedly into her wife’s brown eyes. Don’t they deserve another chance?

I don’t want her to get hurt. I don’t want any of us to get hurt.

Bette reached for Tina’s hand, bringing it to her lips. What if we sent a picture? And a short note. We’ll make a gesture and see what happens.

Tina chewed her lower lip pensively, a furrow creasing her brow.

Hey, Bette said softly, squeezing Tina’s hand. We have our own family now. We’re inviting them to be a part of it. If they choose not to accept our invitation, it’s their loss.

Finally, Tina looked up. I’ll think about it. Okay?

Okay, came the reply, followed by a kiss.
