Breathe Me II * The Sequel * Chapter 3

Bette nodded.  A quiet came over both women as they sipped their wine.  Bette was finding it difficult to speak.  She stared at Tina’s mother.  She looked tired and sad – A woman who was trying so hard to fight through the terrible pain of losing her husband.

"So, Bette," Tina’s mother began, "What do you think about my offer?"

    "You’re offer?"

"Yes.  Didn’t Tina speak with you last night?"

Bette tried to hide her confusion, "We did talk, but it was late."

"I just think it makes the most sense, dear.  With me moving to be with Tina’s sister and the housing market the way it is…gifting the two of you the house makes the most sense."

Bette tilted her head to the side and squinted, "You’re moving? And gifting us the house?  Katherine, I’m not sure I understand…"

The brunette watched as realization clouded Mrs. Kennard’s expression.

    "Oh, boy."

"Oh, boy is right," Bette took a large swig of wine and rubbed the bridge of her nose.  Why didn’t Tina tell her all of this yesterday?  Was this what Tina wanted to discuss tonight?  Bette was full of questions, the lunch not at all going as planned.  The little blue box in her suit pocket suddenly felt out of place.

"So you’re moving in with Allison?"  Bette took a breath and leaned back in her chair.

"With her impending divorce it makes sense.  I can help take care of the kids and get away from the memories here.  Allison could use the help and honestly, I miss my grandchildren more than I can say"

    "But what about Tina?"

"Well, dear she has you, doesn’t she?"

    "Of course, but…"

    "But what?"

Bette’s head was swimming, "What were you saying about the house?"

"Maybe you should talk with Tina, Bette.  I shouldn’t have said anything."

    "Katherine, please…"

Mrs. Kennard stared intently at the puzzled brunette, unsure of how to proceed, "Well… the house is paid off.  I spoke with my lawyer and he suggested gifting the house as an option.  I know that Tina has some money put aside; you guys could make some updates.  You two could make it your own."

Bette’s head was swimming, "You’re giving us the house?"

Tina’s mother frowned, "Do you not want it?"
