By Grace Redeemed, Chapter 2: Communion
Tina woke to pain that seared across her stomach, and her roughly
stitched uterus contracted. She bit her lip in an unsuccessful attempt
to cut off the cry building up in her.
“Tina?” A familiar voice said, blue eyes intensified in color, smooth brow furrowed. “Do you want me to call the nurse?”
Tina opened her eyes as the spasm eased, to the sight of Helena,
rearranging a huge bouquet of flowers on the bedstand and looking at
her with a worried expression. “Hey,” she said hoarsely.
“Hey,” Helena whispered back.
Tina reached for her hand. “Thank youfor the flowers.”
“Oh,” Helena said with a slight blush, “yeh, well, there’s not much to
look at in these rooms.” She ran out of words, then found a few. “I
didn’t mean to wake you. I’m not supposed to be here, after all.”
Tina gave her a quizzical look. “Why not?”
Helena hesitated, not sure how to answer. She hadn’t come here to make trouble but “Bette’s very protective of you.”
Tina let out a faint laugh and grimaced as the smallest use of her
muscles, even for laughing, sent a ripple of pain through her belly.
Her uterus cramped again. “Unh!” she grunted softly.
Helena reached for the call buzzer with long fingers. Tina reached out and covered her hand. “I’m all right.”
“Tina,” Helena gave her stern look. “Don’t be a martyr. That’s what pain meds are for.”
“No,” Tina objected, “it’s not thatexactlybut my uterus is cramping like hell.”
Helena’s face relaxed. “Oh. That. Angelica’s probably hungry.” Tina’s
‘huh’ expression told Helena she hadn’t been prepared for this. “Yes,”
she nodded, her dark hair tumbling delightfully down her shoulders,
“that’s what happens. When baby gets hungry, mama feels it. Are your
breastsare you feeling pressure, tingling?”
Tina moved her fingers to one breast. “Ohhhh,” she moaned, “that hurts.”
“It’s all right. Your milk is getting ready to let down. Here, let me call the nurse so they can bring her to you.”
“Where’s Bette?” Tina looked around the room.
“I I don’t know. I waited until she leftI’m sure I’d be the last person she’d want to see in here.”
Tina’s face softened. “I know. Helena.” What was it she needed to say? “The other day? In the garage? I was.”
