    Changing Places – Chapter 26 – Finale #1

Tina pulled into the hospitals emergency entrance and ran around to the passenger side of the car to get Bette. Bettes contractions were coming fast and furious and Tina was starting to freak out.

Tina: Okay babe, lets get you out of the car and into the emergency room.

Bette: Ohh, *****, here comes another contraction. *****, this is happening way too fast, something has to be wrong.

Tina: Nothing is wrong Bette, just remember your breathing and everything will be fine. Focus, breathe in, breath out.

Bette: You ***** breath in and oww out! Holy mother of God, this hurts like *****. What was I thinking? Okay, it passed, lets get in there NOW!

Shane and the gang had observed what was happening and Dana had run to get a wheel chair. They had the chair there in time to get Bette into it before the next contraction and they ran to get her into the hospital. Tina ran up to the desk, explained their situation and waited as the nurse looked for their pre-registration in the computer. They had done this to save time but unfortunately the hospital had somehow misplaced their file. Damn computers thought Tina.

Tina: So what do we do now? I think my wife is ready to drop this baby any second. We dont have time to fill out all this paper work.

Nurse: Well take your wife back and start prepping her while you fill out the information.

Tina: But I want to be with her. Isnt there another way?

Nurse: No, and the sooner you start filling out the forms the sooner you can be with your wife.

Tina: Well you dont have to be so snotty about it.

Alice: Come on Tina; let me help you with that. Alice smiled at the nurse, trying to smooth things over.

Bette: Ahh *****, her we go again. Did anyone call Dr. Wilson?

Nurse: She is on her way. Lets get you prepped and see how far along you are.

By the time Tina got back to Bette, Dr. Wilson was evaluating her condition.

Tina: Is everything okay Dr. Wilson?

Dr. Wilson: Fine Tina, Bette is just moving along very quickly, but thats understandable given her type A personality.

Bette: Great, now my doctor is doing stand-up comedy. How about some drugs to take the edge off the pain.

Dr. Wilson: No can do Bette, youre too close. Youll have to suck it up, remember your breathing exercises.

Tina waited for the explosion, given Bettes remarks to her when she reminded her of breathing.

Bette: What the ***** is with everyone and this breathing *****. It doesnt work. Oh, here we go again. Ahh, what the ***** was I thinking. I wasnt thinking. Tina, youre having the next one. I cant ever do this again.

Tina smiled at Bettes suggestion. Another one. They hadnt even got the first one born and she was already thinking of adding to their family. Tinas heart was ready to burst with joy. A year ago she never would have imagined being here with Bette, ready to start a family. Her world had really changed.

Tina: Ill do it in a heartbeat Bette. But first, lets get this little one out and into the world. Deal?

    Bette: Deal.

Dr. Wilson: Okay Bette, with the next contraction I want you to push.

    Bette: Here we go, uuuuuggggghhhhh!

Dr. Wilson: Thats it, I can see the babys head, its crowning.

And so it went for the next 20 minutes. Bette screaming and squeezing Tinas hand until Tina thought it would fall off. Finally Bette pushed the baby out. She fell back in the bed, exhausted and happy. So happy! The baby started to scream and Bette started to cry tears of joy. Dr. Wilson asked Tina to cut the umbilical chord and Tina did so, the whole time she couldnt stop thinking about how tiny the baby looked, how absolutely beautiful she was. She had curly blonde hair, and an olive complexion. Dr. Wilson laid the baby in Bettes arms.

Dr. Wilson: You both have a beautiful baby girl, 6lbs, 6 oz., 19 inches. Have you decided on a name?

Bette: Yes, her name is Hope. Hope Christina Porter-Kennard.

    Tina: Bette?

Bette: Is it all right T? I know we only discussed the Hope part.

Tina: Oh Bette, its a beautiful name. Im honored.

Dr. Wilson: Okay you three, lets get you to your room.

Tina went out to tell the gang the good news.

Alice: Is Bette okay, the baby?

Tina: Oh you guys, it was just amazing. The most beautiful thing Ive ever seen aside from Bette screaming and yelling of course.

Alice, Dana and Shane gathered around Tina for a group hug. Alice broke free first.

Alice: So when can we see the baby?

Tina: Bettes really exhausted so how about you come back in a few hours. Give us a little time to settle in with the baby and let Bette sleep?

Alice: You know Im not good at waiting but youre probably right. Why dont we go back to your place and set up the bassinet. This way it will be ready for when you get home.

Tina: Great idea, well see you in a few hours then.

Tina made her way back to Bettes room and quietly opened the door. Bette was feeding the baby, looking down at her with adoring eyes.

    Tina: Hey

Bette: Hey, come here. Sit on the bed with us. Shes absolutely perfect T, isnt she?

Tina walked over and slowly got into the bed with Bette. She didnt want to disturb Hope. Tina leaned backed and Bette leaned into her as Tina wrapped her arms around her. She noticed that Bette had tears in her eyes.

Tina: Yes she is baby, how are you feeling?

Bette: Im just so overwhelmed. Look how small and tiny she is. Every part of her is perfect, from her curly blonde hair to her tiny little toes. She is so dependant on us and yet now that she is here Im not afraid anymore. I know with every beat of my heart that I will be by her side to protect, guide and love her. Look how she is grasping my pinky finger. She already knows she can count on me and I know she can count on you. We are a family T, and that is the best thing in the world. Thank you for finding it in your heart to forgive me and be by my side again. I love you Tina.

Tina: Oh Bette, I dont want to be with anyone else. Ever. Youre my first, my last, my everything. I cant wait to bring this little one home and start the rollercoaster ride of parenthood. I wouldnt want to do it with anyone else. I love you Bette.

They sat like that until Hope finished her bottle and Bette put her on her shoulder for a burp. Hope burp loudly, causing both Tina and Bette to chuckle. As Hope burrowed her way into Bettes shoulder to get comfortable and fall asleep Bette thought of a song she recently heard on the radio. It summed up the moment perfectly and she softly started to sing it:

In my daughter’s eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
    In my daughter’s eyes

In my daughter’s eyes everyone is equal
    Darkness turns to light
And the world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me
Gives me strength when I am weak
    I find reason to believe
    In my daughter’s eyes

And when she wraps her hand around my finger
Oh it puts a smile in my heart
    Everything becomes a little clearer
I realize what life is all about

It’s hangin’ on when your heart has had enough
It’s giving more when you feel like giving up
    I’ve seen the light
    It’s in my daugter’s eyes

In my daughter’s eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she’ll grow and someday leave
    Maybe raise a family
When I’m gone I hope you see
    How happy she made me
    For I’ll be there
    In my daughter’s eyes
