    Chapter 14

“How do we draw the line that signifies whether an image reads as pornography? I mean who gets to say what passes as art and what is obscenity? The debate has been taken up by Laurie Pappos in a series of paintings entitled ‘A group of seven.’ Please welcome Laurie.”

    “Thank you.”

“So Laurie to what extent is this body of work meant to be read as a narrative …”

“She’s awesome. Bette Porter. She’s really awesome.” whispered the young man to the blonde sitting next to him.

    “Yeah she is, isn’t she?”

“You two make a really beautiful couple. I mean that. You’re really beautiful.”

“Thanks but Bette and I are not a couple.”

“Oh I thought I recognized you. Aren’t you Tina Kennard?”

    “I am.”

    “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

    “It’s OK.”

The young man was silent for the remainder of the program for which Tina was grateful, but he was right. They had made a beautiful couple when they were together and still madly in love.

    ***

Bette was wearing a white designer pant suit that highlighted the beauty of her caramel skin tone. Her dark naturally curly hair was loose and lay gently on her shoulders framing her strikingly beautiful face that was brought to life every time she smiled the dazzling Porter smile. Tina couldn’t help but notice that the inner light of true joy now reached Bette’s expressive chocolate brown eyes. It had been missing for a long time. She also noticed that Bette had gained back the weight she’d lost in the first few weeks after the breakup.

Bette had Emma to thank for teaching her how to cook and for insisting that she take better care of herself. Cooking didn’t come naturally to Bette, and she was by no means a gourmet but under Emma’s tutelage she made the best of her minimal skills. That’s not to say she still didn’t have kitchen disasters but for the most part she was now capable of preparing healthy nutritious meals for herself and when she had the family over for Sunday dinners she was no longer just relegated to grilling the meats.

Bette always exercised but she didn’t necessarily take good care of her health. She stressed herself out and was known to skip meals when things got too intense. Emma’s therapies took a whole wellness approach to ones’ well-being that combined diet, exercise, yoga, and meditation. The end result was a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit. There was calmness about Bette that Tina hadn’t seen in a very long time. Bette was actually glowing and was easily the most attractive woman in the room.

    1. Hey Bat, I really love your story. I read your comments, and as some others I never believed that Bette was the bad guy in the show (probably the directors, writers and some of the audience did); I personally was shocked with the lack of impartiality in the show; but your story is different, is not as in the show. I remember hating the way Bette was treating in seasons 2, 3 and 4 (remember trying to skip some episodes when watching TV), and how they made her guilty of infidelity with Jodi in season 5 and with Kelly in season 6 (the last one never happened). IMO the main problem was the uneven relationship (after Tina left her job), the lack of communication, aggravated for the components of an alpha partner and a weak defeated one, like the old idea of a traditional hetero-couple, and they portrayed every cheating in the same way (by the way one cheating doesn’t justify another as it may be apparent from the show). But your story is different, no Bette’s cheating, no daughter; here we have a strong alpha woman, popular, powerful and loved for everybody (no for Helena of course), and a weak defeated one with a great burden of guilt who suddenly has lost the compass of her life falling in the abyss of her remorse and pretense, trying to mask her own misery; both women are suffering and a great love is destroyed, but life keep going, they may survive and thrive; this is what I like from your story. Thank so much for your post and I’m eager to read your update, pps.
