Chapter 28 – CONFRONTATION

“You know how business works. There’s a process for everything.” Bette waved her right hand in the air. “The medical profession is the same.”
“I thought we were getting some place. Bette, don’t act stupid.” Tina folder her arms across her chest. She was becoming annoyed at her former lover again. “The company still bears your family name. You own the damn corporation.”
“I’m trying to explain . . . “Bette began and then got cut off again.
“Uh, no.” Tina raised a brow in sarcasm. “You’re trying to control the situation as you often do.”
“No, that’s not . . . “
“You can pull strings very effectively doctor.” Tina’s voice was razor shape. “I’ve seen you do it in the past very effectively when necessary.”
“I have no idea what you’re referring to.” Bette couldn’t help but huff. She knew she had to keep her cool and remain as much detached from the situation as possible. It was a silent requirement of her position with Porter Corporation and as a doctor. She could quietly seethe under her skin but could never allow an observer or the public to witness her ire for any reason.
“And I guess your substantial influence means nothing?” Tina questioned pointedly, her anger escalating.
“I’m trying to use that influence to help you.” Bette wasn’t going to allow Tina to arbitrarily rail at her. “My team will . . .”
“You’re talking in circles and rambling on about politics in medicine. That’s pure bull shit.” Tina huffed, not believing the brunette for one second.
“I thought I could talk to you, but I see that’s not possible.” Bette started to gather her things. “I’ll have my team . . .”
“No. No team. Not this time.” Tina slammed her hands on the table, clearly growing aggravated with Bette and her innate stubbornness. “Just you Bette.”
“What?” Bette jumped at the intensity of Tina’s reaction.
“I think you owe me a few more minutes of your precious time.” Tina’s voice rose.
“Tina, I . . . “
“No, listen.” Tina glared at the doctor, fire in her eyes. “Put it down as a little pay back for leaving me wondering, why for all these years. All I got was your damn ring back. A fucking note later saying you were very sorry and a few letters that I sent back unopened. Because I was so fucking angry with you. I think, at the very least, you owe me a little more time. Don’t you?” . . .

I liked the way this part of their conversation played out. The back and forth with them was very telling.
Tina discovered further that something is happening with Bette that isn’t normal. I’m sure Tina will have lots of questions about that in the near future.
Bette’s internal war with herself about how she’s reacting to Tina and her proximity to her. Gut wrenching.
And Tina being super emotional because of the situation even though she promised herself not to be. Not allowing Bette to ‘hide’ from her and calling her out on her past actions.
Great chapter and so excited for what happens next.

Okay, another chapter and Tina still does not know if Ashley is in the program or not. Tina is seeing more signs that Bette is not well. And instead of asking for Bette’s help, she is demanding it. Based on what? That they were once friends and lovers? That she is still angry over how the relationship ended? No, because Bette is the only one who can help Ashley and Ashley deserves it in front of everyone else. For me Tina’s demeanor is so off-putting, I would want someone else to be her contact person in Ashley’s care. I might also consider that I may have made a good decision some 15 years ago in breaking off the relationship? But I guess, love is blind…
As to Bette, she knows why Tina is there. First of all to get Ashley help. Okay, why not give her that? Why play this I do not know why your here game or assume she wants to talk about the past. Just tell her Ashley is in the program and will get the best care our team can offer. Then give her the contact information for scheduling and arrangements. But instead, Bette goes through all this gobbledygook and never gets to the point. Its a simple question: Is the Porter company going to treat Ashley or not? All the protocols and health questions can be handled by some else. Bette has rather poor communication skills and Tina is a bull in a china shop with no manners what so ever.

When someone in your family is this sick, we would do anything to save them, get angry, demand, nothing is too much! I think you’re being particularly unfair to Tina when you suggest that Bette was probably right to cut ties, don’t you think?
As for Bette’s illness, how can someone from the outside and without medical knowledge realize something is this wrong; Bette has always been a workaholic, who barely eats when she’s stressed, Do you know the symptoms of hypoglycemia!?!
I’m so glad you understood the frame of mind I had in writing this chapter in this manner.
Emotions are very high for both women & when it’s a life & death situation, a person is all in to do WHATEVER is necessary to accomplish their goal.

Tina’s growing concern for Bette – she noticed her physical appearance the night before and how Bette seemed to be a paler portrait of herself. And then in this meeting, Bette’s near fainting and dizziness has certainly caused Tina to be concerned about her health.
Will Bette say anything about what happened all those years ago?
Will Tina tell her how hurt and saddened she was?

Tina being so determined to get Bette’s help for Ashley…Bette’s momentary concern that Tina might be sick…Tina caring for Bette when she was dizzy, Tina will figure out soon I think that Bette isn’t well
And the ‘intimate intensity’ and tension between them…such great writing

There was a lot to digest & convo to process.
I tried my best to depict their emotional state as well as both of them trying to be rational & it not working as well as either of them would have liked.
Emotions like these can be messy & temperamental – especially when someone’s life is in danger.
I was thinking of your sister as I wrote about Ashley & how much Tina would sacrifice for her being able to live.

Bette and Tina have been apart 15 years. Tina has no idea if Bette is a practicing physician, researcher, or administrator. She had two children and lost her father and brother. She has a serious disease. Tina knows none of this. She is no longer a part of her life yet demands Bette drop everything and treat her sister. Tina nor we readers know if Bette is a practicing physician. Tina is rude and constantly interrupts and is demanding without listening to what is being said. They have no relationship anymore. They don’t know each other. As for hyperglycemia what does that have to do with anything? And how would Tina know anything about Bette’s life habits? That appears to be an assumption Tina and of yours from your comment.
The first words out of Tina’s mouth are “I believe we have some unfinished buisness.” Does this sound like a woman who is scared, worried, anxious about her very sick sister? Not to me. It sounds like someone drawing the battle lines for confrontation on what happened 15 years ago. I am not swayed by her speech that she is there to get help for her sister. Her anger seems more about their non-existent relationship rather than the lack of information coming out of Bette. That seems to be the direction this author wants to take this story. And that is what the author is doing. For me, I cannot be sympathetic to Tina when her main thrust for seeing Bette is not Ashley’s benefit but to get answers from what happened so very long ago. The chapter ends with Tina still in the dark as to whether the company is going to include Ashley in their treatment programs but points that Tina is about to have a “showdown” conversation on their breakup. And that, for me, does not make Tina very likeable, much less loveable. Her priorities seem very much out of balance and her timing could not be worse.
So Bette is not very likeable because of her ghosting of Tina all those years ago. And Tina is ….. well, I don’t really know; just seems to want to corner Bette and get answers. And Ashley is her vehicle to get them. And that for me does not make me want to root for Tina either. Bette is sick, so my sympathy is with her now, and of course with Ashley.

I could feel the tension in the room and certainly understand Tina’s anxiety and fear for her sister.
Bette – trying to stay neutral – and we all know she won’t!

I liked when Bette asked TK when she had become a doctor. I could feel the sarcasm from Bette.
