    “Yes, I am,” Jade answered Rian now. “The pizza franchise costs more and the sandwich franchise about twenty five percent of that, surprisingly, but I am planning to co-invest in both. And I’m adding you in, using your percentage.”

    “That’s all yours, I still say. Anyway, didn’t he talk about you taking a role in managing those franchises also?” Rian asked.

    “Yup,” Rian answered. “Since I’ll have my own money invested, I don’t plan on standing aside at all. So, yes, I will be heavily involved. Not only for my part of things; for your slice, too.”

    “Stop it. Won’t that get in the way of your studies?” Rian asked worriedly.

    “I’ve finished with the research for my final project, and I’ve done a lot of the writing already. Plus, I’m basically done with all my course work,” Jade explained. “So, I’ll manage. And keep my grades up, maintain my scholarship.”

    She set her mouth in a firm line, even if Rian couldn’t see her. “Besides, isn’t this part of growing? I’m committing to something, so I sure as hell am going to put a lot of effort into seeing it through. I don’t aim to lose money, Rian. Not mine; not yours.”

    Rian was silent for a few seconds, and then asked quietly, “Didn’t I tell you, Jade Wetmore, that you were going to be amazing?”

    Jade’s heart lurched and then she stumbled slightly on an uneven pavement. Fearing that she might have turned an ankle, she cursed under her breath.

    Rian asked with some concern, “Are you sure we can continue to talk while you’re running? Why don’t you call me later when you’re done?”

    Jade answered hurriedly, “Yes of course we can continue to talk. I was just startled by something here. Why do you ask? Umm… have I sounded out of breath or something all this time?”

    Rian laughed lightly, “No, actually. You’re sounding about the same ever since you took my call more than half an hour ago, and you were just walking then. Where’d you get to, by the way? You said you were making your way to the river parkway, right?”

    “I did … wait a sec … bunch of bikers passing me here,” Jade answered.

    “On your left … on your left … on your left,” Rian heard a muffled series of warnings in the background.
