Chapter XIX – Empire State of Mind – Gunshot

Beatrice suggested they could use two converted hansom coaches as part of a “ferrying system” to move the gold between the temporary shed to the larger Clarence coach, which wouldn’t be able to navigate the tricky path from the road to the shed the way a more nimble converted Hansom coach could. John and Jack had originally planned to simply carry the gold using satchels they were bringing for the job, a laborious and potentially long process.

Beatrice explained Jack could load one of the converted hansom coaches that Beatrice would then drive to the Clarence coach, then John could unhook the converted coach and transfer the gold to the larger Clarence coach while Beatrice rode back to the shed to help Jack hook the other converted coach that he’d have loaded up with gold from the temporary shed onto the horse. Beatrice would then drag the newly-filled converted coach to the larger Clarence coach, and then drive back to the shed with the other coach that John would have emptied so that Jack could then load that coach up. They estimated it would only take several trips all in all to empty the shed, using this system.

John would drive the last converted coach back to London, following the larger Clarence coach that Jack would drive, to which the other converted Hansom would be hitched. Beatrice would stand where a footman usually stood in the larger Clarence coach, to keep watch, during the journey back to London, rifle at the ready, and prepared to shoot or return fire with anyone who could chase them down.

Beatrice also came up with the scheme that worried John the most – how to steal the gold from the moving train carrying the gold being sent from northern England to Paris, once Mr. Pimms had stolen it. She suggested that they stick with John’s original plan of replacing the gold with lead shot once Mr Pimms and his cohorts stole it from the safes the gold was being transported in. (Through an informant who was originally going to be used for the job, but had fallen ill, and subsequently died, Edward learned Mr Pimms was planning to move the gold he was going to steal from the safes, to the luggage car, masquerading these in sturdy but plain-looking leather satchels.)
