Chapter XIII – Empire State of Mind – Making Gold Disappear
Bette suddenly felt a strong connection, a kinship even, to this remarkable woman who’d died long, long ago, in a Parisian jail, while mistakenly held there by the Allies.
The likely answer to the Why? question: If what Raoul had told her about Nelle was anything to go by, Bette guessed Nelle probably wouldn’t have put herself through all that trouble if she didn’t feel that her efforts would eventually make a difference. She didn’t have to devote precious time to decoding the ledgers. She could have just turned it over to authorities, once she’d been arrested by the American troops. Maybe she heard something while treating the German officers who’d held her captive and had forced her to treat their wounds?
How? Propelled by self preservation, and the natural instinct to escape, and survive, not just for her sake, but that of her unborn child’s, also – she must have worked feverishly on this when she’d finally reached the rooms she’d rented in Paris, after escaping from her captors.
Now, that was something she could relate to, Bette thought.
For you, Nelle, I will see this through. I’ll do what I can to ensure your bravery would not have been in vain.
For Tina and my family, and my unborn child, also. I need to find a way out of this.
First things first: I need to get a hold of the numbers in those gold bars without tipping anyone off. Maybe Tycho can do that? But I need to establish whether he’s friend or foe. Is he part of the second group, the one that I’d established a truce with, while rehabbing from my injuries? What he’d said earlier seemed to indicate that.
“My role?” Tycho asked, as if not sure about what he’d just been asked by Bette.
“Yes. How does a financier like you get into the picture?”
He pursed his lips, as if considering how to best answer Bette’s question. While he pondered, Bette saw the screen of her phone, which had been resting on the coffee table, light up. Message from Brom, she saw, as she thumbed the glass screen. He’d texted that the security consultant he’d assigned to Bette for this Luxembourg trip was on her way back to Bette from Brussels. Dave was booked on the next plane out to New York, and would be overseeing any updates to the security arrangements they’d put in place in the duplex. Brom was also assigning someone from the old team that used to follow Tina around, to once again shadow the blonde.

I hope Tina won’t make a rash decision and quit her job. I am afraid she will lose her sense of identity and cause problems in their marriage. Please keep Bette and Tina safe and their marriage strong.

What a tale, Sky! I love the intrigue and the references to every day issues. You have managed to make numbers exciting. Please keep Bette safe as she unravels the secrets. I want her to return to Tina and their babies unharmed. I hope Tina waits until the dust is settled before she makes any decisions about her job. I think their will a great monetary foundation for her to manage if Bette cracks the code. Thank you for the time and effort you devote to this site. Please post again soon.
