Chapter XX – Empire State of Mind – Defending the Castle

“When leaving the subway, I could wear her wrap-around Chanels, wear a summer coat also, and then use those various alleyways you use to get into the Chelsea building.  From the back, it’ll be hard to tell us apart.”

Bette was rocked.  Tina continued, pressing her advantage.   “So I’ve already found a couple of wigs that’ll be just perfect for she and I, honey, made by this small company down in the garment district.  They did the wigs for a film we just wrapped in the Hamptons, and they stood up to everything throughout the filming.  The hair is so life-like, lustrous even.  You really can’t tell, even up close, that it’s a wig.”

Bette had recovered and was shaking her head slowly from side to side, frowning.  “That’ll never work.  It’s too risky, T!”

Tina laid a series of soft kisses on the brunette, trying to ease her concerns.  “Baby, I’ve been thinking about this affair you’re pretending to have.  People say that ever since we all returned from London, you and Jenna have rarely been seen together.  And Dave told me, after he mentioned something to Veronica, which she shared with me, that about the only time you and she had gone out together was to get coffee one morning.  And while the two of you were in the café, your head was buried in your Mac Air, and she was scribbling things on a sketchpad.  You two looked like roommates, not lovers.  Plus, I know you bailed on the museum party last Saturday, on the 12th, in that Herzog + de Meuron-designed building, so Jenna went stag.  And the only other time you were seen out together was when you two went to the Chelsea food market on Sunday morning, and, again, you two were interacting, if you could call it that, like friends.”

Bette blew out her breath and bit her lip.  “Well … I know I’m supposed to be having this intense affair with her.  But I just can’t get into it, baby.”

Tina gave her a small smile, “I know, honey.  But apart from the two of you not looking the part, which could raise people’s suspicions, Jenna also told me she’s really worried that you’ve been working late into the night, night after night.  Sometimes, when she wakes at 2 or so in the morning, and passes by your room, she sees your bed still made up, not having been slept in.  And then, when she goes to the living room, she sees some light leaking out of that connecting room where you’ve set up your stuff.  Which meant you were working away in there.”

    1. YES!!! Could the notebook have the code key? I hope Miss Brooke is Bette’s guardian angel. I want her to return to her home with Tina and Angie and the new baby to leave happily ever after. Great story as always, Sky. Keep the updates coming.

    2. I knew you would do it! Take every character that you have introduced and weave them successfully through your plot. It is like reading a Robert Ludlum suspense novel with a better twist. Bette And Tina interactions! So nice, hard to put down(click off?) Thank you for a great update
