Chapter XXI – Empire State of Mind – 1987
“Okay, I’ll take that one, then.”
Casey piloted the Bentley down a covered driveway. Bette saw a laser beam out when he stopped in front of silver bollards, and fix on the security reader attached discretely to the middle of the top of the Bentley’s windshield. She noted that a series of cameras had also swiveled towards Casey, possibly recording his image.
“Does security have your picture in their files?”
Casey spoke over his shoulder as the retractable bollards lowered smoothly to allow Casey to ease the car forward. “Yes ma’am. They match what their cameras capture with facial recognition software. The actually have extensive files on all the drivers. If the facial recognition was inconclusive, then I would have had to speak into a monitor, for audio recognition, as a back-up. Lastly, I can swipe a special ID against the card reader and press my palm against another reader. It’s a back-up system they just installed.”
He continued as he turned the wheel smoothly to ease the car into a spot in front of a broad entrance that led to double glass doors, “Beyond everything that you’ve seen, there are other security features that include “tire killer barricades” that can pop up in several points around the driveway and parking garage to stop vehicles that somehow make it past the bollards by blowing their tires out.”
He hopped out to open Bette’s door and politely extended a hand to assist her out of the car. “Ma’am if you’d like I can ask the security personnel to explain a few more of the interior security features to you. One of them can accompany you to Ms. Halloran’s apartment.”
Bette answered, “I’d be interested to learn more, yes.” A thought began to form in her mind.
Ten minutes later, Brooke was walking her to Phillip’s study in the spacious four bedroom apartment that Brooke was staying in.
“Bette, as we discussed during the lunch, do feel free to take your time in here. I’ve tried to assemble the papers that you seemed to be interested in, and put those in a pile in the middle.”
They both walked to the desk, and Bette saw a well-worn small leather notebook that was enclosed in a protective cover, plus in a hermetically sealed box that lay in the center of it, lying in the corner of the broad glass-topped work table.
