They were barely inside when she turned to face both of them.
”In love? In love with her?” Alice asked Tina while nodding at Bette.
”This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Bette held her hands up in an effort to stop Alice from directing the diatribe towards her.
”I got angry, and when I’m angry, my emotions spill over,” Tina explained. ”It certainly wasn’t my intention to announce that here, of all places…”
”I’m so happy for you,” Alice leaned in to hug them together. ”So happy.”
She backed away from them, but still let the palm of her hands rest on their upper arms.
”And Bette I have to say, you’re not as much of an asshole as you seem to be in court,” Alice said.
”High praise indeed,” Bette replied.
”You know what I mean,” Alice laughed off her phrasing. ”When we face each other professionally, you’re kind of a jerk, you know? But you’re an attorney trying to get a job done. I get it. As a person, you’re alright.”
”You’re alright too, Alice,” Bette replied. ”But please, know that in my heart I’ll always consider you an asshole.”
Alice wasn’t sure how to take this last comment, but decided to make her exit to give the couple a few moments alone during what was obviously an emotionally charged time. Once the door slid shut, Bette turned to face Tina.
”I guess that takes care of letting Nicole’s family know what you mean to me,” Tina offered.
”Your little speech answered questions for a few people who witnessed it,” Bette replied.
”It likely would have been better if the first time I said that was in private,” Tina said quietly. ”I love you.”
”I’m completely, totally, passionately in love with you,” Bette replied, reaching for Tina’s hand.
”Wow, that was…a great response,” Tina smiled.
”Thanks,” Bette replied. ”I was saving it for when you said it first.”
”I didn’t think I’d ever say that to someone again,” Tina said. ”Then you showed up in my life.”
”I was starting to wonder if I’d ever say it,” Bette replied. ”And here you are. And it’s all I’ve wanted to say.”
They shared a quiet moment together before rejoining the family. And every new person that Bette encountered that afternoon couldn’t help but offer a knowing smile because they’d witnessed a declaration of love.
