Tina was so ashamed of the worker and what happened, that she couldn’t look Bette in the eye.  She felt bad that she couldn’t protect her.  Bette mistakenly thought it was an omission by Tina to not say or do anything about Mr. Smith.  That she was not going to punish him the way she did the slaves.

“If there’s nothing else, Miss Christina, I would like to go back to my quarters and get ready for today.”

Over yonder at the Peabody’s plantation, Helena rose early so she could try on the dresses that her father had bought for her.  She was looking forward to the fair.  She had won the title of Southern Belle last time; this time she was just looking forward to marrying Michael.  But not for the reasons everyone thought.

“Candace, dear, can you please fetch me that red dress?” Helena asked.

    Yes, Miss Helena,” Candace responded.

    Chapter 9

Helena knew she had to play out her role if her plan was going to work.  Michael was a good catch, but only if she was into men.  Being forced to marry him was foolish.  She wanted to marry Tom so she could be close to Dylan.  But with her brother Eric finding them together, life had been miserable.  He persuaded their parents that it would be more feasible and more profitable if they both married into the Kennard family.

But she came up with a plan so that would backfire.  That would forever destroy her brother.  She loved her brother dearly, but since he had joined this secret organization, he had changed.  A change that neither she nor her mother, Margaret, who likes to be called Peggy, liked.  Helena’s mother was a sweet southern belle, but since her husband, Master Marshall had been sick, she has been running the plantation.  She had to fight off every man who wanted to come in and take over.

Back on the Kennard plantation, Tina did nothing but cry.  How could Bette not see how important she was to her?  How could she not see Tina’s side of things?  There was no way she was going to lose Bette.  No way was she going to let anyone take Bette away from her.  Even if that meant being uncivil to Bette at time.  Bette had to understand that being Miss Christina, the future lady of Peabody plantation, she had to play the role.  Tina knew what she had to do, and there was nothing that was going to stop her.

    1. Poor Bette! To have both Michael and Tina pulling at her, isn’t helping. I’m sure when Tina realizes that Michael is getting close to Bette, that she will not be a happy little princess. PS.

    2. This story is phenomenal!!! Why you weren’t nominated for this story I can’t answer, but you should have been! Okay, Emae29…I hadn’t thought of that! Oh wow, so if Tina and Michael’s father was the one who “breeded” with Bette’s mom, Bette would be their sibling…yikes! That gets commplicated! And as for SupperDaddy’s question, “if Peggy has to “fight” for her plantation is she then not the owner of it, and Helena the heir? If so then why is Tina being referred to as the “future lady of the Peabody plantation”? Helena is marrying Michael….right???” If my memory is correct, during that time period in the United States women couldn’t own property. So, that means that if Peggy’s husband dies, the property would go to their male child Eric, not Peggy or Helena. Also, Helena is set to marry Michael, so she would be living with Michael on his plantation, and Tina is set to marry Eric, so she would be the future lady of the Peabody plantation. I think that’s right anyway. Like I said…incredible story!!! Thanks!

    3. So glad you’re back! I thought you gave up on it. I’m so hooked on this one. Stories of this era are so romantic and scary at the same time. Tina needs to wake up soon, and tell Bette what her plans are before something happens with Michael and Bette. I hope she won’t get mad and mistreat Bette b/c of what she sees with Michael. Bette is in the middle of all this and just wants to understand her place if you will and someone to accept her and love her. PPS…I check every day for this one. Thanks!!!

    4. I am not sure about this one. I do know that Elizabeth has a place, she is a slave, and while everyone wants love and acceptance, she isn’t going to find it with her white owners. It almost seems to me to be implied that in these relationships, between Michael, Christina and Elizabeth, that choice is a part of the equation, but Elizabeth has none. Whatever Michael wants to do to her, he can do. Whatever Christina wants her to do, Elizabeth must do. It is clear that both Michael and Chrisitna want her but in their desire, they are still treating Elizabeth as property, and not thinking at all about what she needs.

    5. We’re sooo happy that you posted an update. We really missed this story. You’re doing a terrific job with the description of what is happening in everybody’s mind, their feelings, the uncertainties. Tks for bringing such controversial theme with bravery and honesty. We truly enjoy how you are telling it. Big hugs & kisses. Sincerely, Lucero & Marsha (Your loyal fans from Mexico City)

    6. Ok Michael and Bette is weird and don’t want to see them together, Tina is not happy what she see and she gonna kick someone ass and hope not Bette. Hope Helena will kick her brother ass. Please post more, thanks!

    7. Well, baby, what seems to be building between Michael and Bette is kinda weird. Tina will not be happy at all to witness what she’s walking in on! This was not boring, and you still left us with a cliffy! Bette is truly conflicted by what is going on!

    8. oh what a tangled web we weave. Michael and Tina are in love with Bette. Tina walk in on the about to kiss (I assume). One question though, if Peggy has to “fight” for her plantation is she then not the owner of it, and Helena the heir? If so then why is Tina being referred to as the “future lady of the Peabody plantation”? Helena is marrying Michael….right??? SO LOOKING FOR THE UPDATE CONSIDERING WHERE YOU STOPPED!!

    9. As with all questions of human behavior, there probably was no set rule universaly followed, but my guess would be that how the slaves addressed the masters would largely depend on if they were household servants or more directly laborers in whatever the family trade was. For one thing, within the house presumably the entire family would share the same surname so it would be inefficient to address “Master Smith”. And we still have evidence (even if it makes usuncomfortable) of the masters using familiar terms for the house slaves, ie Uncle Tom, Uncle Ben’s, Aunt Jemima. Now onto the story.

    10. Hello again, I forgot to talk about the story itself d’oh :P… I think what Bette is feeling is only natural, it was Michael who came to her rescue and is consoling her during this time. Yes he does have some authority and she might be intimidated by that but the way you have written it shows that this closeness is mutual… she doesn’t understand the drive of her body but she doesn’t feel forced to follow through with a possible connection. As for Tina she is taking her role above her feelings and unfortunately in this time females were always taught that this is the best way to get what you want… she feels that distancing herself will prevent Bette from being harmed by her actions in the future and yet she is playing with her emotions to the point of confusion which leads Bette to where she is at the end of this story, it will be interesting to see how both Candace and Helena will fit in with Bette and Tina since we are unaware of Candace’s personal persuassion but we do know that Helena is attracted to woman, does she go for Tina the sister of the man she is to marry or Bette the servent of the family who she could have pending her marrying Michael… hmmmm lots to ponder… you are such an amazing story teller and I cannot wait to see where you go. Take your time, I’ll be waiting :P, Sincerely, JC

    11. Oh sh*t! Michael and Tina are falling for Bette. It’s not wierd to me. Stranger things have happened. I mean, she’s ‘Bette’ after all. How can they help themselves? She’s beautiful, innocent and fresh. She’s different from what they consider the norm. But what has me really anxious to find out is if Michael and Tina are her brother and sister. Could it be that Master decided that he wanted more slaves and picked Darlene to help breed more? Honestly, it was common practice back then. So, what’s Darlene’s story? Was it the Master? Or was she raped by one of the plantation’s oversee-ers? Also, how is Tina going to keep Bette safe? What is her plan? I have so many questions. I am just dying to see the next update. You kill me with these cliffhangers. It’s like waiting 9 months for the next season of TLW to start; or waiting each week for the next episode! PPS!

    12. Hello Succulent1, I must tell you that I think this story is brilliant and you are handling it with such detailing… being true while still retaining your creative liberties. This is such a harsh time in human history, the barriers between humanity and barbarism was so thin. As for your inquiry as to how slaves identified their owners that is really interesting during my research on this subject I haven’t really thought to focus on this so thank you for the insight, from what I have been able to gather these conditions were different depending on which areas they resided. It was much more stricter within the South well before the divide and it was something that was dictated by the individual families. If I happen to come across anything else I will be sure to inform you. This story is so intense and you are Brilliant to tackle such a harsh period. Bravo. Sincerely, JC

    13. I don’t think Michael and Bette is weird. I think it would be natural for Bette to look to someone who might be able to protect her and Micheal has shown he can and will. I can see her falling her falling for his kindness just as I can see her falling for the sexual energy TIna is throwing her way. If I was a slave I might hook-up with Michael for safety and Tina for nookie. As far as the name thing goes. It probable would be either. Tom Smith could be Massa Tom or Massa Smith
