Comfort Enough
“Don’t yell at me, I know I’m late,” Bette said breathlessly, sitting down across from Alice. She picked up The Planet’s menu and skimmed the Daily Specials as Alice watched, wordless.
“See? I’m ready.” Bette flashed her most winning smile.
“Relax. You act like I’m going to give you detention,” Alice shook her head.
“We dropped off Tina’s car at the garage”
“on the way to the Center so she could have her oil changed. Yeah. She called me,” Alice interrupted, holding up her cell phone. “Can I assume that you’re getting along pretty well with this room mate of yours? No loud music after midnight? No borrowing your clothes without asking?”
“Things are fine,” Bette said, straightening her silverware.
“Fine, as in, ‘Wow, for two people who were ready to kill each other six months ago, we’re being amazingly civil?’ Or fine, as in, ‘Any day now, we’ll be buying a new set of hers and hers towels’?”
“Fine as infine.”
“Ah. Strong, silent type, huh?” Alice said, sipping her latte.
“I don’t have any breaking news. We’re living together, we’re sleeping apart. No casualties to report. We’reroom mates,” Bette smiled.
“And you’re happy about that arrangement?”
Bette leaned back in her chair, considering. “I am happy. The past month has been really good. Healing. Seeing Tina every day, spending time with her. Getting to know her again. I didn’t realize how out of touch we’d become.”
“Say more.”
“You know. All of the clich stuff about how people drift apart and start to take each other for granted,” Bette said.
“In other words, it’s a clich for a reason.”
“I know I took Tina for granted. She may even feel that she did the same with me. But living together like thisit’s as if all of the reasons that I first fell in love with her have come back into sharper focus. Her sense of humor. Her intelligence. Her compassion. The way she’s completely unaware of how beautiful she is. There are a million things that I stopped noticing,” Bette said quietly.
“So as Tina’s room mate, you’re falling in love with her. Wait until her wife finds out about this.”

Love the story, can’t wait for the next chapter
It’s nice that Bette is opening up and acknowledging her feelings on how things are progressing. She’s openly admitted to her part in dismissing Tina and appears to be trying to be come to terms with the fact they might not ever get back together. All the more sweet it could be if they do.
I would like to know what Tina had to say to Alice when she called her to say that Bette would be late. You know Alice probably grilled her like a detective questioning a suspect.
Another great installment. Short, but then again any time a story is good it’s always too short for me!
How can you just cut this off. Love that Bette and Tina are getting alone so well as room mates. Thanks
Good to see that Bette is realizing how things started or how they ended up where they were. But, could we possibly get another posting, cos this was way too short.
You are awesome.
I hope there is another post on the immediate horizon because this one ended suddenly.
definitely sound sad..
Love this story just as much as the first time you posted it. Looking forward to each new chapter every day. Thanks so very much for writing!
You are SUCH a good writer! I have devoured all of your stories – your dialog is so spot on the producers she hire you to write their character’s words. Thanks so much for the fun.
