    Comfort Enough

Bette felt like she was dying a slow, miserable death. For the past 40 minutes, she and Dana had talked about presidential politics, the price of gas in Los Angeles, and which of the Williams sisters was really the better player. Right now, she was listening to Dana give a long, painfully detailed explanation of top spin.

“Soyou know, there’s more to it than that, but I’d probably need to make a chart or something. Maybe even take you out on the court,” Dana said, nodding.

Bette smiled in return, sipping her hazelnut latte.

After a pause, Dana looked up and into Bette’s nearly glazed-over eyes. “You didn’t ask me here to talk about your tennis game, did you?”

“No. I didn’t,” Bette sighed, summoning up her nerve.

“I didn’t think so. Then I guess you’re going to try and talk me out of marrying Tonya, right? That’s what everyone wants to talk to me about,” Dana said, a little defensively. “My parents, my brother. Did Alice force you into this?”

“I’m not going to try and talk you into or out of anything,” Bette assured. “I just want to know how you’re doing. Really.”

Dana exhaled slowly, and turned her attention to pulling tiny chunks out of her blueberry muffin. “Busy. I mean, there’s a lot to do. Flowers and caterers and swans. We’re having swans and maybe even releasing doves during the ceremony. And there will be love birds at the reception in these huge gold cages.”

    “Well. That will besomething.”

    “Tonya likes birds,” Dana said.

“How are you and Tonya? Aside from all of thebirds,” Bette asked gently.

“She’s so amazing. Do you know that she makes my lunch every single day? And she always puts some kind of note in it. Sometimes with a lipstick kiss,” Dana grinned, rolling her eyes.

    “That’ssweet,” Bette said.

“And she’s incredibly organized about this whole wedding. Like, she has all of the phone numbers for the caterer and the florist and the choir and the bird wranglersthey’re all in this database.”

    “A choir?”

“Yeah. Tonya knows a guy who manages this women’s choir, and she thought it would be totally great to have them. Isn’t that an excellent idea?”

    1. Bette may not be the resident expert on relationships, she is however, a woman that has clearly learned from her mistakes and sees the opportunity to share those lessons without being didactic.

From Dana’s perspecitive, it’s quite thrilling to be put upon a pedestal. Unfortunately, the higher the pedestal, the thinner the air. That not only leads to lack of oxygen that can contribute to fuzzy thinking, but it also obscures the view of that which is closest to us.

Birds, swans, gilded gages and a choir? Oh my…

    2. that was great – even to see some of Bette’s humor come out – How are you and Tonya …aside from all of the… birds?? —-hee,hee loved it!! Great chapter.
