Coming up for air – part eleven

Coming up for air – part eleven

Talking to Bette made Tina calm down; it made her feel less alone. Bette had called her ‘baby’ during their conversation… twice. Tina didn’t know how to respond to that… and that wasn’t even the truth. Her body reacted all on its own with a rush of pleasure. It felt like back when she had just met Bette. Tine remembered how Bette’s use of cute nicknames made her blush, tingle, and feel so loved. Over the years she stopped noticing the terms of endearment, she didn’t hear them or didn’t listen hard enough. She knew they were there, said to her with intimacy and tenderness, but they had become so much a part of everyday life that the words became inaudible to Tina. She took them for granted, took Bette saying them for granted… but no more. The feeling had returned. Once again Tina heard every word and the physical reaction was instant. How to react verbally or emotionally was an entirely different matter. She was not ready to return the favor and it scared her to death how good it felt to hear those words again.

Tina didn’t see Henry when she went back into the house to pack a suitcase. She left undetected and drove towards WeHo. At eleven o’clock she checked in at The Ramada Plaza Hotel. It was surely going to blow her budget, but at that moment she didn’t care. She just wanted peace and a place where she could think without being interrupted.

Bette went back to the conversation with her sister. Kit knew Bette’s attention was disrupted. She was clearly thinking of Tina and couldn’t quite follow what Kit was saying. Kit shook her head in amusement over how, whenever it came to Tina, Bette was helpless. Bette had filled her sister in on the conversation with Tina and Kit knew Bette wouldn’t find any peace of mind until she heard from Tina again.

When Bette’s phone buzzed for the second time that evening, Kit put on her jacket and quietly slipped out the door sending a smile and a wave in Bette’s direction. Bette returned the smile and sent Kit a grateful look.
    “Tina?” Bette said.
    “Hey you…” Tina replied.
“Are you ok? You ended the phone call kind of abruptly…”
“Yeah, sorry about that… I’m fine… or better anyway.”
    “That’s good… that’s really good, Tina.
“How are you, Bette? With all this drama I think I’ve forgotten to ask you that question…” Tina smiled feeling a sense of repose wash over her for the first time in ages.
“… I’m better too,” Bette smiled, “I guess that’s the best way to put it. So, where are you?”
“I’m at The Ramada Plaza on Santa Monica Boulevard… I can’t afford to stay here forever, even though it’s really nice… so I have to find a solution to my newfound homeless situation soon.”
“I can help… with money or whatever you need… I want you to find some place nice, Tina… James can help you find something. He’s great at stuff like that.”
“Yes, I know he is. Thanks, Bette… but no thanks. I don’t need money or the help of James… I’ll be fine.”
“…so you say…” Bette said feeling a little disappointed.
“Bette, don’t you think it’s time, I start to take responsibility for my own life… without the help of you or James – or Henry for that matter? I have lived in other people’s houses for way too long – your place, Alice’s place, Henry’s place… finding my own space is long overdue,” Tina said without realizing how her words hurt Bette.

    1. How sad and terrible that Tina had to bring the whole thing down. Please make it better. I understand what Tina is going throught, but needs to work on her anger.

    2. and with that Tina went to step back, i know that is a difficult situation for both but Bette is trying so hard and giving Tina the space that she needs then Tina should think twice what she has to said.

    3. you weren’t kidding… tina held nothing back… well maybe thats whats needed… no sugar coating… bring it on the drama that is as long as they end up together… off to work… later babe

    4. Wow! Lets be real they do have a lot of crap to get off their chests. I’m with AmandaMG, I don’t mind some drama as long as at the end of the road its B&T together where they belong.

    5. That was pretty hurtful, Tina… Sure, it’s a difficult situation, it must still hurt, but now Bette’s being more open and actually listening and Tina comes and bam!! slap! That wasn’t fair… post soon please…

    6. thats some of their problem that tina keeps throwing that back up in bette’s face. all the bad stuff needs to come out first so that only the good is left. but hopefully the good stuff will come soon. love this story. PPS

    7. Wow…Tina went from sunny to sh*tty in 0 to 60. She needs to check that…there’s nothing wrong with being angry at the situation…but what good can come from constantly being pissy with Bette if she wants to work it out? Keep posting please.

    8. Bette needs to suck it up…She hurt Tina and that kind of hurt doesn’t just go away…They have alot of work ahead of them and leaving the room every time something unplasant comes up, isn’t going to help.

    9. It was good to see them finally talking like mature adults and then Tina had to go and bring up Candace once again. At times Tina needs to really think before she opens her mouth. I know that she is still hurting over that, but she needs to discuss it with Bette and not keep throwing it in her face like she does. I have faith that if they can calmly sit down and talk and really listen to each other things can be worked out. If you really love someone you do what it takes to keep that love alive. Thanks for this great story and post again soon.

    10. Ok, there’s Bette, trying so hard to understand what was going on with Tina, and all Tina can do is bring up that old business and be a big b*tch about it?! Geez. I know Bette did things wrong, too, but if Tina’s looking to repair, as they both seem to be trying to do, maybe she should take 5 giant steps backward and try to discuss all this with Bette? Drama’s fine, as long as they work it all out in the end… I just wish Tina would be more rational, sometimes…

    11. I agree with what you said. In to many stories Henry is a jerk or something not likeable. It would be nice to have peoople realize their actions. Thanks for writing it since we will never see it on the show. Thanks again.

    12. They both keep hurting each other with words and actions. Tina felt that what Bette said was not true and lashed out at her, and Bette said what she thought to be true. I don’t think that Bette was even thinking of the Candace thing being brought into the conversation. Bette did the right thing by walking out of the room to gather herself. That will leave Tina the space to understand the viscousness of her words. Bette in one sense needed to hear those words to understand Tina’s dispirit behavior after the affair.
