Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

    Thursday, November 27, 2008 a.m.

"Mama B!" Angelica called out happily as her other mother appeared in the kitchen door.  The young girl wore her personalized chef jacket as she mixed dry ingredients in a large bowl. "You slept late!"

Bette walked over to her little girl and knelt next to her, "I’m sorry, pumpkin.  Mama T shut off the alarm clock so I didn’t wake up. Now, why do you think that Mama T did that?"

"She said that that you don’t like cooking."

"Did she?" Bette raised her eyebrow as she looked at Tina.

"You were tired, too," Tina suppressed her laughter.

"Mamas, we can have our special Thanksgiving pancakes now!"

Tina turned her attention to Angelica and moved next to her chair, "Yes, sweetie.  Time to make the pancakes.  Should we let Mama B help?"

Angelica looked at Bette in confusion, and whispered to her Mama T, "Does she know how?"

Tina whispered back, "Yes.  Mama B may not like cooking, but she knows how."

The family had the cinnamon apple pancakes dusted with powdered sugar that Tina and Bette had planned as the one of their family rituals to celebrate the holiday.  The three talked about the family gathering that was happening that afternoon, though Angelica was confused by the abstract concepts.

"But my aunts come to dinner a lot."

"This is a special time.  Remember the way it is different when they come to dinner when it is one of our birthdays?"

    "It’s a birthday?"

"No, no, it’s just different.  Today, it’s not a birthday, it is different because we think about all if the good things we have in our lives and all the people we love, even the people who have passed."

"Like Grandpa Melvin and Great Uncle Russ?"

Both of her mothers were surprised and speechless.

"Yes, like Grandpa Melvin and Great Uncle Russ," Bette replied, having been the first to recover.

    "Are there presents?"

Angelica sat on the floor in the living room watching the Thanksgiving parade on television.  When she found a favorite balloon she would yell to describe it to her mothers, who were working in the kitchen.  Sometimes the little girl excitedly called to them and asked them to join her so that they could share in the onscreen magnificence and one or both mothers would join her and share her delight.

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
