    Crossroads- Ch. 18

Alice paused at Lara’s door, clutching Thai take-away in one hand, and a bottle of wine tucked under the other arm. She’d hurried home for a quick shower and change after leaving Meg in deep conversation with Shane. Now dressed in a pair of fatigued, olive capri pants, and a form fitting black ribbed long sleeve t-shirt, she was suddenly nervous. On one hand, she was looking forward immensely to seeing Lara, but on the other, she knew from Lara’s subdued tone after her counseling session, that the appointment had been exhausting. Alice was still reeling from the revelation that Lara’s mother had committed suicide, and that Lara was in therapy. She couldn’t imagine how Lara was handling the sudden feeling of exposure she must be experiencing.

Quelling the butterflies in her stomach, she took a deep breath and lifted her hand to knock. Just as she was about to make contact with the door, it opened to reveal a quizzical Lara. Both women jumped at the sudden proximity.

"Alice." Lara’s eyes drank in her presence hungrily. "I was just wondering what was taking you so long. Here, let me carry something." She took the bag of Thai food and leaned in to give Alice a light kiss. Alice could taste the slightly fruity taste of wine on Lara’s breath. She felt herself become slightly aroused. Lara balanced the bags of food between her cast and chest and grabbed Alice’s left hand. "Come in." She led Alice into the dimly lit apartment.

Lara deposited the food on the island and faced Alice. Her hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she was dressed in faded and distressed jeans that hung low on her hips. A tight blue sleeveless shirt was layered underneath a white oxford that was tied at Lara’s waist. Alice didn’t think she’d ever seen Lara look lovelier.

"Thanks for bringing wine along with dinner….though I have to admit I’ve already opened a bottle of red. Would you like a glass?" She offered the bottle for Alice’s inspection.

"Looks good to me. Thanks." Alice studied Lara’s face as she poured. Her face was paler than usual and she looked tired. Alice opened her mouth, but decided against asking how she was doing. In her own time. More than ever, Alice felt that Lara would open up to her when the time was right.

    1. YES! I am the first commentor-ess! CommentER? Who the hell cares. OK, so when Goldrun and Blue post updates on the SAME freaking night? I am speechless, and will post more (you are feeding my ego…always a good, I mean, dangerous thing, tee hehe!) on the actual chappy soon!

    2. Sorry i havent commented in awhile, but i have been reading!!! This was a great chapter,im kinda liking this lace ship!! Keep up the great work and PPS.

    3. i´m back, again! great updates!! i love your lace. at this chapter, alice is so sweet. lars dreams are so hard, but i´ll think she is just dreaming of (evil) dana, because she knows, that danas death were nearly the death of alice. all the drugs she ate like sweets… she couldn´t loose them both. (i´m so tired, sorry for my bad english)i´m so proud of alice, that she could wait for lara, didn´t pushing her to talk. and the the great ending, she told lara, that she is in love with her. that is so sweet. i agree with bluemini, ther could be fifty more chapters lol.so, all i could say for now is: sail on, my captian, sail on!!!!

    4. Well, who wouldn’t lose their appetite over dreams like that. So, I’m guessing that it’s more like she’s going through the stages of grief in her dreams since she steadfastly refused to do it in her waking hours…and dreams do have a way twisting everything back on itself in weird and irrational ways. So, not so much with the trite, Gold. You are doing a wonderful job!

    5. Yeah. That about sums it up. I don’t even have anything interesting to say. Except that I hope you keep posting, frequently, with chapters as good as this, cos I love this story. Yeah.

    6. Terrific update, Gold – as usual! I’m so glad Lace finally got to spend a quiet night in together, with no interruptions! Lara sooo needed that talk with Alice. And, Alice is such a star – I love how sweet and supportive of Lara she is. And, yay (!!) for her telling Lara she loves her – I really didn’t see that coming in this one, but that’s what makes it so believable. It was the perfect moment to totally open up to Lara, and to convince her that she’s not going anywhere. Fantastic – and not a slice of cheese in sight! I know you’re drawing to a close, but I hope there’s still a chapter (or fifty) more in the works [*crosses fingers hopefully*]!

    7. loved it! really great update, and thats saying something that you were able to impress me at 7:47 in the morning! good job! although i dont know why im up this early…huh…gonna go to sleep now! lol post mroe soon!

    8. OK. Here’s my PS: I find this chapter even more intense than the last one. Or maybe because of the last one’s particular depth, or maybe ’cause I was listening to some melancholy music by Telepopmusik whilst reading, this update delivered a whallop. All kinds of wonderful potential for me thinking you’re moving into a slow-brewing, and, I use this word in the purely literary sense*, intense climax. Talk about emotions. I think one thing you’ve really captured is what any of us want–to understand and to be understood, epsecially with a partner/loved one. I had to go back and read again and let the chapter sink in–which, btw, equates with mad sexcellent writing skillz in my book! Kudos as always. Just when I think you can’t get it any better. I mean, even how you place them physically at points, with Alice ‘nestled into Lara’s taller frame’ is so spot on with the just-right amount of quiet, no interruptions, and austere beauty of nature (sunset, rooftop garden as change of vantage point) providing room to verbalize apprehensions. And the subtle signals of comfort between our two heroines (gestures, eating off each others’ plates, etc.) emphasize the level of comfort they feel towards each other. They may not have it all figured out yet, but that lends to this story’s credibility. Trite? Where? And any tailspins are right on…into Emotion-Land (don’t forget, it’s also always OK when the train stops in Get-It-Onfordshire with layovers in Nookie-Ville. OK, it’ll be up to you to ascertain the appropriateness of where more phsycial intimacy comes in [oops, no pun intended, but I just can’t stop today, geez!]). I totally did not see it coming that Lara would voice that she couldn’t remember how it felt to love Dana. Angst! And Alice says THE WORDS. A cliffhanger and resolution all rolled into one? Sigh….more soon please, your writing is …[insert 87 postiive attribute adjectives here, I don’t want to use just any old boring ones for now…] *literary, my ass….;)
