    Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Chapter 2

Emily asked, ‘What was that about?’

Captain Beech answered, ‘Honey, I’m very sorry about this.’

Emily said, ‘Curtis, this is our home at…’ looking at her watch, ’10:30. What is going on?’

Beech answered, ‘It’s about a case I’m handling. Now please, let’s just go to bed.’

Emily said, ‘Oh you better tell me what is going on that would make a maniac show up at our house at 10:30 at night and yell loud enough to wake up the neighborhood.’

Nervous about how his wife was dealing with this situation, and worried about how other people might start talking about it, Beech did the only thing he could do. He lowered his head and closed the door behind him and his wife.

He asked her to sit down on the couch and he sat on the stool across the coffee table. Then he let out a large breath. Without even thinking about attorney/client privilege, he started explaining what was going on.

Beech said, ‘That woman is a client of mine. She’s gotten into some trouble.’ Then he stopped for 2 seconds and continued, ‘She’s being investigated for allegations of….homosexual misconduct.’ This made Emily’s mouth open and her jaw drop. ‘She believed she was being investigated a few weeks ago so she came to my office3 for some advice. My best advice was for her to decide if she wanted to stay in the Army. She told me there was nothing to decide. When I was assigned her case, we went over the allegations and a list of incidents where was seen displaying…affections and…favoritism…for other women and for other female personnel.’

Mrs. Beech closed up her mouth and put her hands together tight. She had a straight look on her face as her husband continued, ‘Now, I didn’t know about this until just now, but the woman she had been in a relationship with was visited today. Apparently they intimidated her but I don’t know what else happened. And…well…there you have it.’ Looking down at the floor in shame, Capt. Beech couldn’t bear to look his wife in the eyes. For all he knew, she thought he sent the investigators over to Alice’s apartment, on purpose, and withheld that information from Tasha in order to help the prosecution get one more dyke out of the military and stay in good graces with the Big Time Brass.
