    Dust – Chapter 20

“Mom?”, the young guy is calling me, and I turn my head instinctively, jolting.

“Where are you?”, I ask, trying to catch a glimpse of him in this thick forest of trees and bushes and wild, sky high flowers.

“I am here”, he answer and I know he’s smiling. And when I turn around he’s right in front of me and has the most intense green eyes I’ve ever seen in my life. I open my mouth in amazement and he just shrugs his shoulder.

“I miss you to, mom… You and Shane….”, he murmurs gently, “…But I don’t want to see you here… Not now, not this way”.

A set of tears roll down my cheek as I take his hand and I feel his warmth. Like he’s really here, like he’s real, like he’s not my neverborn child. He squeezes my hand gently.

“You must be careful, mom. You and Shane”, Samuel says, “There’s someone who thinks that me being the only one here is not enough”.

“He didn’t want to see us there…”, I mumble to myself, feeling shivers going down my spine.

“What are you talking about?”, Shane whispers, placing her hands on my shoulders and resting her forehead against mine. She obviously wants to keep this conversation private.

“What are you talking about, Carm? Who’s he?”, she repeats, bowing her head a little to meet my eyes. She looks worried, concerned.

    “Samuel”, I reply weakly.

Shane frowns, confused. Then, she sighs.

“Carmen…”, she hazards, brushing my shoulders lovingly, and I am sure she’s thinking that I am in shock. That I’m delirious, that I am finally losing my nerves.

So I grab her forearms and watch straight into her green eyes.

“No, Shane. You don’t understand. Do you remember my dream? The dream I had about Samuel?”.

    She nods imperceptibly.

    “Yes, I do, honey, but…”.

“No, wait. He told me that he didn’t want to see us there. I thought he was talking about death. I was sure he meant that he didn’t want to see us die. But now… Now I look at that garden and I know that is dangerous. I know it, I feel it, Shane”.

My words run out rapidly, frantically. Shane is listening and her face looks pensive, thoughtful. A little perplexed, maybe, but still meditative.
