Ensnared by Guilt #24 by Blackbird

    warehouse blight exterior

    Warehouse – Tina

After driving past row after row of blighted warehouses, my driver points to Mary and her security detail searching ahead in an overgrown lot.

She joins me at the curb.  ”Bette’s car was found on the other side of that building. Call me morbid, but I had to come down here.”

Looking around the bleakness I feel desperate. ”But would they’ve torched her car? Then hidden her nearby?”

”Depends. Were the kidnappers in a hurry to ditch it? Maybe Bette was putting up a fight? Maybe she was unconscious? Maybe someone else stole the car after she was taken? Dumped it here.”

”Oh God! Tell me we’re we going to find her.”  Tears slide down my cheeks. ”Please!  Tell me you believe it’s true!”

She presses a handkerchief into my hand.  ”Of course, we are.”

”This is the ninety-ninth time today I’ve completely lost it.” I pat at my tears. ”Are the police even still looking for her?  They camped out at my work all morning.  Completely the wrong direction.”

”But digging into your past isn’t wrong. You realize, someone you know did this.”

”The police, now you! It’s not my fault Bette was taken! How can you stand there and say that to me?!” I storm away.

”Tina, come back here!” Mary catches my arm, and spins me around to face her.  ”Number one, there’s been no ransom demand.  Number two, their play’s been psychological.  Number three, Bette’s still alive.”

A sharp gasp escapes me. ”I have to believe it!”

Mary’s hand brushes along my shoulder comforting me.  ”Come on. I brought you down here for a reason.”

    Maggie Q as Jake

From the shadows of a warehouse doorway a woman in black emerges. ”Hello, Tina.  Joyce sent me.” Her eyes lock onto mine. ”I’m Simone.  I find people.”

”Oh, thank God!” I grab her hand.

Mary peeks past us inside the warehouse. ”Los Angeles, I suspect, has no shortage of these?”

”Joyce pulled the zoning records.” Simone lifts a folded envelope from her waistband. ”They’re seven hundred thousand active warehouses in LA County.  Two hundred thousand dormant, but taxes paid, and sixty-one thousand the city lists as blighted and abandoned.”

My heart sinks. ”That sounds like fifty square miles.”

Simone looks at me, as if I’d guessed the exact number of jelly beans inside a jar. ”She’s right. Finding her that way is impossible.” Then to Mary. ”But your guy at Justice traced Bette’s text. Phone belongs to Darwen Goodbee.”

I can’t wait for the next chapter! Bette surely has balls. So glad she got some licks in. And happy she got away. She needs to get to a phone quickly.SheBar, SheBeast? I still think it has something to do with that Denbo.
I could be wrong but I could be right.

Fantastic! OK so it must have something to do with DoubleD. I recall Bette’s deadly right from that self defense class???????? Your casting is as brilliant as your writing. Love MaggieQ ???? Is this Dawn’s twisted way of showing interest in the movie?

gchm says. Hey Blackbird, this is really good, very intriguing, and lot of mystery. I am truly captivated with the whole touch tones series. As Bette has escape from her captors, the questions are, will Bette show up to her family before the police catch SheBeast? How will Tina discredit Jenny’s proposal for the new script about Nina and Bev in Lez girls movie? How will be discovered the involvement of the She bar girls in Bette’s kidnapping? Will Bette beat and knock down She Beast in this story? (it will be very nice to read more about that). I hope you will be going on with these stories for a very long while, they are very entertaining.
      Thank you.

Perfect first sentence…I never told Bette that when I lived alone I rarely slept well…this has surprised me…that there are mundane things she hasn’t gotten around to telling Bette.
My heart had taken off like a bird across the water…so romantic…Blackbird…(btw are you taken?) Interesting how Bette & Tina life together on script is now an important part of the police’s investigation…nice touch there…..So happy to hear how now Tina hates Jenny as much or more than Bette now…Love the line: She’s not on my soundstage! She’s out there!…I can feel Tina’s pain not getting anywhere with the police…Do like how Aaron is asking for Tina’s opinion on the Nina’s actions…maybe he will come through…are you leaning towards this…
Excited that you wrote Tina in as a co-conspirator in the kidnapping & that she is only too fine with it for the lady of her love she will walk on hot coals in bare feet…Another interesting fact you wrote here…Bette’s view on capital punishment have changed…now who would have thought to write that in…What an ugly beast of a woman you have created SheBeast tattooed
woman…of course we would all love to see Bette beat the shit out of her…couldn’t believe you have SheBeast pouncing on Bette…#Yikes….I am happy you brought Alice in because the line you wrote: Is that a gun in your pants? (priceless)…then Alice wets her pants a little…yes, Tina has to hold it together for Angelica’s sake…amazing what a mother would do not to see her child hurt in anyway. Who is this vagabond lady…nice touch to the story…yes, you have me sitting on the edge of my seat again…I can’t get enough of your writing…

      • Lillian,

I’m so glad you picked up on the cosmic shift of their ethical and moral mindsets. Under stress is where a character begins to change and for me, it was interesting to imagine what Tina’s reaction would be to see the prisoner Simone had nabbed. A week earlier, had Tina been asked, “What do you think of capture and torture?” No doubt, she would have been appalled, as we all would be. However, when it’s a loved one, we revert to our most basic drives and natures, key among them are Fight and Flight. In that sentence, she has chosen: Fight.
Bette, on the other hand, has shown us over and over again, with her hatred of Henry and dark thoughts of his demise – that she is more in touch with the revenge and Fight side of herself. And no doubt in my mind, if you’d asked Bette a week ago her stance on capital punishment she would have had an aversion to it.
        Not today.
I have a few favorite lines, but one that sticks with me because it is a knife in Tina’s heart is her answer to Aaron, Saying it I can barely breathe. “She called her boyfriend.”
My thanks again to you for always leaving such thoughtful comments that go through the important plot points of my stories and offering insights that meant something to you as you read them.

Hi, Blackbird – that line (“saying it I can barely breathe”) was powerful, because you could feel her horror. Tina in the series was never really made to examine her role in the their mutually assured destruction (I know, I’m using that phrase incorrectly, but it works for me at the moment) – not until that rather hasty confession in the elevator. Letting her do so here gives her more maturity, and hopefully will give them more resilience. I have to admit that I read Bette’s change of heart on capital punishment as a bit of sardonic humor, not a full-blown reversal. Will have to re-read, now. But I’m looking forward to a new installment, so that I don’t have to re-read as much. :)

Wow, thanks, that story kept going, causing me to do the happy dance. So much happened in such a small space. From the surprising mislead of the police thinking this is all on Tina that Bette took off to the SheBeast allowing Bette a chance to get even, this chapter had everything!
Tina’s choices during her relationship with Bette and her time with Henry sometimes comes back to bite her in the butt. And now it’ll be in the movie, oh yay!
I loved the conversation with the homeless woman and Bette and the sharing of the water and mirror. The best was the woman taking Bette to a safer place.
Bette’s hit the line of no return, a deep growl coming from within that she at first doesn’t recognize, but soon realize it’s her making the sound. And the attack is on.
Thanks for another great chapter and for letting her escape. It’ll be great to see how she escapes the kidnappers and gets home.

What I liked about your story . . .: Bette was SO FUCKNG BETTE!!
She was awesome the fight was genuine and unyielding and probably be incensed that her time and in captivity could have been well spent elsewhere
Basically a complete waste of her precious time
And to top it off insulting.
