Eternal Flames—Chapter 6
The call came at 9:47 AM on a Tuesday morning while Tina was helping Carson with his science project on the kitchen table. Her phone buzzed with Helena’s name, and Tina’s stomach immediately clenched with nervous anticipation.
“Helena?” she answered, trying to keep her voice steady.
“It’s over,” Helena’s voice was triumphant on the other end. “Darren took the plea deal. He’s pleading guilty to bigamy and fraud charges. You get full custody, no visitation rights, and he’s looking at eighteen months in minimum security.”
Tina sank into her chair, the relief so overwhelming she felt dizzy. “Are you serious?”
“Dead serious. His lawyer called this morning. Apparently, the criminal investigation turned up even more financial irregularities than we initially thought. His business partner was laundering money through the company, and Darren’s been complicit for years. He was looking at federal charges if he didn’t cooperate.”
“What does this mean for Carson?”
“It means Carson is legally and completely yours. Darren has no parental rights whatsoever. He can’t contact him, can’t try to see him, can’t interfere in any decisions you make about his upbringing.”
Tina looked over at Carson, who was carefully gluing cotton balls onto his cloud diagram, blissfully unaware that his world had just shifted permanently.
“And the financial stuff?”
“That’s where it gets interesting,” Helena continued. “Emily Ratliff’s cooperation has been invaluable. She’s provided documentation showing that Darren used funds meant for your household to maintain his San Francisco life. We’re pursuing restitution, though honestly, most of his assets are tied up in the criminal case. But Tina, you’re free. Completely free.”
After hanging up, Tina sat staring at her phone for a full minute before Carson’s voice broke through her shock.
“Mom? Are you okay? You look weird.”
She looked at her eight-year-old son, this beautiful boy who had been the only good thing to come from her relationship with Darren, and felt tears spring to her eyes.
“I’m more than okay, baby. I just got some really good news.”
“What kind of good news?”
Tina knelt down beside his chair, taking his small hands in hers. “The legal stuff with your dad is all finished. And it means we’re free to make whatever decisions we want about our life.”
