    Expedition of the Heart—Chapter 7

Alice its Tina. Where are you? … OK, good. Could you stop and find one of CiCis books? Yeah, Cecilia Hammond. We were thinking that if we could find her agent, they would know how to get in touch with her yeah, weve tried everything Tina moved the phone from her mouth. Alice wants to know if weve tried calling CiCi directly. They each looked at each other and shook their heads no. Nope none of us besides, we dont have her number and shes supposed to be in the field until tomorrow yeah good idea, Tina turned to Bette. Is Marinas cell phone in her purse? Bette picked up the almost forgotten purse and looked through its contents. She found the cell phone in a side pocket and held it up for Tina to see. Check and see if Marina programmed CiCis number in it babe. Tina turned her attention back to her conversation with Alice. We have it and well look OK see you soon. As Tina hung up the phone, a doctor approached their small group.

Are you the women waiting on Ms. Ferrer? he asked looking at them.

Yes how is she? Bette answered as they all came to stand in front of him.

Shes going to be just fine. The bullet passed Shane cut him off.

Bullet? What bullet? You didnt say she was shot! Shane said looking at Bette and Tina accusingly.

We didnt know! Bette said with a look of disbelief on her face.

Im sorry doctor please go on, Tina said grabbing Bettes hand.

As I was saying, the bullet passed relatively cleanly through her shoulder. There was no contact with bone, but we are working on some ligaments and arteries that were severed. She received some stitches for the cuts on her head and we were able to remove all of the glass. She sustained substantial blood loss, but weve been able to stabilize her. Over all, she was very lucky and should only be with us a couple of days for observation. The doctor paused as they took in what he had said. Do any of you know how this happened?

Not really, she was having relationship problems and decided to end it. Thats all we know, Bette answered. Her face had become flushed as she tried to keep her anger in check.
