Falling Hard, but Landing Softly (a one-off)

Three weeks later, we were inseparable. By the start of the fall semester we had moved into our first apartment together. Our days were filled with classes, work, and of course play time. We could never seem to get enough of each other. Weekends were spent traveling or spending time with family and friends. We had dinner parties and movie nights. I loved cooking big meals for all of our friends and we would sit around playing games and laughing well into the night.

After graduation we both worked for a year, and then moved into the city to go to grad school. Two years later, we were ready to begin our careers. Life was perfect. Then, one day you were gone and my heart shattered into a million little pieces like confetti of a ticker tape parade falling from the sky. I can’t wrap my head around it. What did I do? Did I not tell you enough, show you enough? Why was I not enough anymore?

It’s funny what you think is important in life and in a relationship. We place so much value and importance on the big things like being able to provide a big house and an expensive car. Being able to afford a designer wardrobe, meals at fancy restaurants, vacations at 4 star resorts. All of those things are nice, but at the end of the day, they don’t really matter.

You know what I miss the most? A thousand little things that when added together made our lives so rich. I miss grocery shopping on Sunday afternoons. I miss how eager you were to be my taster when I tried a new recipe. I miss how you smell. I miss how you would laugh at my jokes. I miss the way we had to stop in every town along the way on a road trip because you have a bladder the size of a quarter and serious thirst issues! I miss giving you a massage after a hard day. I miss bringing you fresh daisies. Most girls want roses, but you said they were your favorite because they just look so happy. I miss sneaking around to be the first one to leave a post-it on the bathroom mirror to wish the other a good day. I miss hiding post-its in your car because you always beat me to the mirror! I miss watching you draw and having to clean charcoal marks off of everything you touched without thinking. I miss finding my papers and books with ink doodles all over them because you don’t even realize your doing it when you talk on the phone. I miss the way you would let me play with your hair until I fell asleep after I had a bad dream. I miss hearing you wax dramatic about calories after devouring the whole box of Hot Tamales that I surprised you with. Even after the tantrums, I always bought you more because I knew you secretly craved them & didn’t really care about calories. I miss playing guitars and singing with you all night. You always laughed at me when I’d lose rhythm, but it wasn’t my fault. The sound of your voice caused a major disconnect between my brain and my hands. I can’t help that you do that to me. I miss getting iced in and having a week off from work with you. I think we watched every chick flick ever made. We owed it to ourselves after risking our lives to get to the movie store. I miss walking through Central Park with you and eating hot dogs and roasted nuts. I miss the Cape in June. It was perfect wasn’t it? I miss holding you when you cry. I miss fighting with you just so that we could make up. I miss you. I MISS YOU…

Every time I thought that I knew everything there was to know about you, you would do or say something else to prove me wrong. I don’t know how I managed to stay alive after 7 years of living with you. It’s amazing that my heart could keep beating after all the moments that you took my breath away. When you would look at me and I would just know. I knew you loved me as much as I loved you. You believed in me. You took care of me. You stood beside me and I was home in you.

So, now after 8 years, here I am still wandering aimlessly. My life is suspended in mid-motion waiting for you to come back to me. Please come back to me… Please come back… please…

Tina: Bette, baby wake up. Wake up babe. You’re having a bad dream. Wake up! Sweetheart, wake up!

Bette: T? Oh T! You’re back! You came back! I missed you so much!!!

Tina: Babe, I never left. You were having a bad dream. It’s ok, I’ve got you.

Bette: T, it was awful! I thought you left me.

Tina: Bette, I could never leave you! You are my home.

Bette: So, it was just all just a dream? Oh, T, I love you so much! I love you so much baby! Hold me please.

Tina: Of course! Here, you want to play with my hair until you fall asleep? I love you B! Always & Forever… Go back to sleep. I promise I’ll be right here when you wake up. Tomorrow and every day after…
