    Finding One’s Way: Chapter 4

Stupid day, actually. Its all come to *****. I was wishing Id never wake up this morning, which of course didnt happen. She spread her hands. Shane is still alive.

Were all pretty clueless, here, Dana interjected, pointing out that they had no idea why Shane suddenly had a death-wish.

I dont think I ever told you guys the whole story.

You havent exactly been around, Tina said. But we understand. Youve always wanted to be your own boss -I mean, who wouldnt? -and things just fell into place. A new shop, a great location, fresh ideas. Its just really weird that youve been silent about things lately. Tina put a finger between them. And dont act dumb, Shane. We know somethings bothering you.

Sorry, I dont usually gush and fall apart like Dana here.

Dana shot her a venomous look.

Yeah, but you can tell us whats bothering you. Maybe we could help. Tina gave Shane an encouraging smile and a squeeze on her arm.

We never expect you to divulge your secrets, Dana put in, piqued and ready for a word fight, if needed. After all, if that ever happened, youd have to share half of the citys lezzies with us.

Shanes smile was a bit more sincere. Ha-ha, Dana. Very nice.

Shane, endearing as she was, allowed Dana her comments, indulged her in a way that warmed everyone in the group but Dana herself (at least not noticeably).

Caring little or none at all about what other people said, it was easy for Shane to simply draw negativity into a wholly different direction, permitting a non-zero-sum game (also known as a win-win situation) by simply willing it to happen. It was, Tina thought, because Shane knew that her candor, full-blown and sharp, could rupture anyone when it was coupled with her temper.

I got involved with someone older, married, Shane explained. All very messy from start to finish, which I didnt realize then; she had a daughter who got hooked on me and it went to ***** after that. The relationship with her mom was very hush-hush at first but misunderstandings here, crazy husband there and voila. Now she doesnt want to see me, her husband enforces a restraining order all on his own, and her daughter thinks Im a *****.
