    “How has tonight been for you? Any thoughts about Sidney?” asked Carmen. Bette’s eyes watered and she looked away. “How could I not? We built this place together. I can almost feel her spirit here. I think she would have loved your show. And I do feel she’s at peace.” “Really?” Bette nodded and returned

    “How has tonight been for you? Any thoughts about Sidney?” asked Carmen.

    Bette’s eyes watered and she looked away. “How could I not? We built this place together. I can almost feel her spirit here. I think she would have loved your show. And I do feel she’s at peace.”

    “Really?”

    Bette nodded and returned her gaze to Carmen’s dark brown eyes. “Yes. I can let her go. Really let her go.”

    Carmen nodded. “You needed that. The closure.”

    “I did,” Bette replied.

    They shared a reflective silence that Bette finally broke. She tented her hands together under her chin and said, “You look tired. Were you coming in to say good night?”

    The painter smiled broadly. “I was. But also, I wanted to check in on you.”

    Bette nodded. “I’m good. It’s been a great opening. One of the best we’ve had here.”

    “Not that,” said Carmen. She stood and shoved her hands into the pockets of her shirt.

    The gallerist looked up at her. “Then what do you mean?”

    “You’ve had a very exciting night. Last time I was here with you, the circumstances were different. You had to give everything you had just to get through the night. We were both completely spent,” said Carmen.

    “And now?” asked Bette.

    “You’re on a high. I can see it. I can feel it. This went better than I ever expected.”

    “Ahh, so you doubted my skills,” said Bette with a smile.

    “More like I had a limited perspective.”

    “That’s fair,” Bette replied.

    “Bette, I’m checking in with you because I know how you’re feeling. “

    The gallerist’s expressive eyes studied the artist before her.

    “And how am I feeling?” she asked quietly.

    “Invincible. Exuberant. Powerful.”

    “Maybe.”

    Their eyes met. Carmen continued. “And for people like you and I…we both know how a night like this might end.”

    Bette sighed and rested her head in her hands. She held Carmen’s gaze. “Yes. With cocaine. Lots of cocaine.”

    “Yes,” said Carmen. Her voice was so quiet it as nearly a whisper.

    “It’s so easy to fall back into bad habits. It would be almost automatic,” said Bette.

    “I know. That’s why I wanted to stop in. Take all that extra energy and go home and spend it with the woman you love,” said Carmen.

    2. Sex can be addictive. And having sex with Tina could be addictive for Bette. Even though this does not appear to be a bad thing at the moment. If this is something that Bette is using instead of drugs and divert her attention from drugs. then is this any worse than going for a run or a swim instead of drinking? It is only if she does not disclose to Tina that she has a desire to use and that is why she needs to be with Tina.

      Great opening for Carmen. It will be a success for both Bette and Carmen.

      Interesting how Bette described her relationship with Janice to Carmen. Let’s see how mother and daughter will go on.

      Finally Tina was able to go to an opening got to see Bette in action and learned more about her work persona. And Bette clearly enjoyed being able to share this moment with Tina. That will help them to learn more about the other and strengthen their relationship.

      I totally understand that they were hot for each other after a night like this. Nevertheless Bette should tell Tina about her cravings for drugs after their moment in the office. I think it is important that Bette shares her struggles with her.

      Simply love this story, MTS.

    5. Now that was a Chapter…full of emotion and feeling and lots an lots of detail which is my favorite part. You must have a muse????. Like the convo’s clearing things up between two of Bette’s favorite woman . The detail in their dresses and and the painting brought this chapter to life. The re-channeling of Bette’s energy I definitely like????. Thank you.. lovely chapter
