    Forged in Fire: Chapter 26

It was Bette’s belly that woke her at 3 am on Saturday morning. She jumped up and raced to the bathroom, confused when she didn’t recognize her surroundings in the dimly lit room. Her foot hit the corner of a table and she nearly fell, but Alice caught her. Shoving a wastebasket in her face as she rubbed Bette’s back.

It felt as if everything Bette had eaten for the last 2 weeks was now purging itself. Her head throbbed and her mouth felt furry. She sat down on the couch, holding the wastebasket in her hands, her head bent over the opening as her stomach heaved. Alice sat beside her, holding her hair back.

    “Let it out,” said Alice.

Bette didn’t need any encouragement. When she was done heaving, she gasped for breath, her head sweaty. She felt hot and sticky. She placed the wastebasket on the floor and closed her eyes, leaning back against the couch.

“Alice, where am I?” she asked.

“You’re at my place. On my couch.”

“What happened? I feel like shit,” she said.

Alice sighed. “You had a rough night.”

    “How rough?” asked Bette.

“You got drunk. Extremely drunk. And then you passed out when we got back here.”

Bette’s head was throbbing, and her heart was racing. “No, God. Oh my God. I don’t…I don’t even remember drinking. I don’t remember anything past us going into Rainbow Room. How much did I drink?”

Alice shrugged. “I don’t know. We were having a good time. I got up to dance, when I got back to our table, you were tipsy. I tried to stop you from drinking, but you were not having it.”

Bette held her pounding head in her hands, tears in her eyes. “Oh shit.”

“I know it looks bad now, but it happens, Bette. Sometimes we all fall,” said Alice.

Bette was sobbing softly. “I fucked up. I really fucked up. And I don’t even remember it. Alice, what else did I do?”

    Alice winced and looked away.

“What? What did I do?” asked Bette.

Alice rubbed her neck and replied quietly. “You danced pretty close to this one chick. She was all in your face. I kept telling her you weren’t single. She didn’t seem to care.”

    1. Oh hell….Bette! Bette! This is a major set back… it will take a bunch of time to get over this and get back to some semblance of sobriety. The lying? That’s what alcoholics do…they lie to hide their problem. Sometimes they even have good intentions, but most of the time its to hide their drinking. Tina needs to search the house for any more reserves and get rid of them. That way she will always have to go out to get her alcohol. Drinking a bottle in a day is a lot of alcohol. If she keeps this up, she will need to be institutionalized for a few days to dry out. And then she is going to have to want to stay sober after that. Its a hard path. But she needs to do this or she will lose Tina and everything else she deems important in her life.

Great writing ….. tragic reflection of a real life problem. Thanks for the chapter.

    2. I’m tired from this Bette – from drinking cheater, who always ready to relapse. After this chapter i’m not believe that happy finale possible from them and i don’t think it can be believable.

I’m really sorry MTS because from begging the story about student Bette and Tina was one of my favorite, but now i’m done with it. I’m just tired from this roller coaster.

      • I have noticed that you really don’t like Bette very much and always refer to her as a cheater. In this story Bette is portrayed as an addict with a disease. Pardon an observation that requires no response but just wondering why a person who despises a fictional character so much reads these stories.

        • Why always? In TLW because she is. It this story she never be a cheater until this chapter. In this chapter we know that she danced very close to some chick and didn’t remember what she doing with her later. And by the way – she didn’t tell about this chick Tina also. So i’m assume she just afraid she actually cheated. But what interesting – it’s absolutely don’t bother her.

          • The Bette Porter in this story is a self loathing addict (cocaine and alcohol), having been abused, beaten and raped, knowing she was a target to be murdered by her lover’s father, while her ex wife was in fact murdered and her sister almost killed, and more. The Bette Porter in this story has and continues to endure so much suffering. The call with Tina was brief and focused on Tina trying to get her to not drink until Tina could get back home to her. Which failed. Bette is still drinking. Alice gossip and added melodrama about Bette’s behavior does not really matter to me. Why didn’t Alice look out for Bette? Like Carmen did. If anything did happen it is on Alice! Bette’s life and mental health is what matters. She needs professional help and compassion.

            • And why Alice needs to look up for Bette? Is she a child? She grow up woman, who can make decisions by herself. If she cheated and drinking – it’s all fault, not Alice.

This Bette needs not lover or wife, this Bette needs baby sitter. I don’t want that Tina all her life baby sitter this grow up child, she deserve better.

Carmen can take this Bette i don’t mind.

    3. So sad. It did not take much for Bette to fall off the wagon deeply. Fear this is going to be the start of a total relapse. She has so many years of substance abuse and so little coping skills. Really thought the rape was never totally dealt with as well as the loss of ‘parenting’ Kit’s son. So much. Tina is totally out of her element in this. She can’t baby sit Bette. Tina loves Bette so much but she also cannot believe her. I can’t even blame Alice. Wish I could. That would be too easy. Maybe Alice will go check on her. But it is too late. Bette is a master at covering her tracks. She needs in patient therapy. That much is clear.

    4. So unhappy to read this
Annoyed at Alice but then again I often am!

Bette will now have to work so much harder and need Tina more.

Difficult times and a difficult chapter looking forward to you taking us to better reading soon please.
      SG

    5. Tragic, but realistic portrayal of the life of an addict. It’s not something they are able to easily turn on and off.

      Hope Tina gets home soon.

      Great writing

    6. Wow! I’m sad for Bette. Tina was right to bring to things to Alice’s attention. Alice should have take Bette’s alcohol addiction into account and checked on her. Alice is very all for me all about me. The longest friend would at least reach out after a drunken night to Bette’s scale.

    7. I’m agree – i also like parts about students Bette and Tina. But this – it’s one of the stories where i really don’t want Tina and Bette end up together.
I don’t know if author wanted that some readers have feeling like this or not – but for me this chapter was the last also, sorry.

    8. Tough one to read. You were right, MTS, it is more realistic that Bette would relapse. Even if I didn’t want to read it, it was to be expected. While it is important to have people around who support her in her fight against it, she has to want it for herself. She won’t seriously stand up and fight her addiction if she only does it because Tina wants her to. It has to be her intrinsic motivation.

Martha and Billy already pointed out some very good points. I totally agree. Bette hopefully decides to go to an AA meeting and also see her therapist. So much pain still burried in her mind and heart. Did she ever talk about the rape with a therapist? Can’t remember.

I’m glad that Tina for once admitted that she was out of her depth. She needs professional input how to handle the situation and how to take care of herself as well.

You’ve given your story another dramatic turn, MTS. As hard as it is to read, I love it.
But now I’m really anxious what’s happening next! I have another day off (official holiday because of Whitsun) and a lot of time to read. So bring it on ;-)

Enjoy your Sunday – however difficult it is in times like these

      KP

    9. Geeze, having a well-routed addition is cruel in it’s capture 😩. As quickly as Bette had sobered up and poured a full bottle of scotch down the drain with no regret, she grabs 1/2 a glass and drinks it “just to get the edge off”.
what edge is she talking about???🤔

Hopefully Tina will go talk with Kit and Kit will impress upon her that Bette will lie to her whenever she is “edgy”. The lying and deception will be harder to overcome as opposed to the physical & emotional components of fighting a disease.

I have no counsel 😥😔. Such a Mt Everest to climb in order to have a “trusting” relationship. 😶😕

Sometimes, hardships run in 3’s so I figure however many women Bette encountered up close while clubbing with Alice will pop up to tell their story when Bette & Tina find themselves out in public joying a night of closeness. And then here we go again in the horrible cycle.

    10. Great chapter true to an addict. And I dont blame Alice friends who are addicts are good at hiding and the lies are always there. It just like people who are suicidal

Some dont let on that they are that far gone… we all know someone who has took that path and we had no clue.

Addiction is like a wave. Then calm waters.. and one thing can trigger it. A smell a work a thought. And they are like a toddler you have to listen to what’s not being said and always have someone watch after them.

They need help they cant help it. It’s to over whelming. That’s why there is AA. People to talk and help you through it will never go away. Thank MTS great chapter.

    11. I am new to this story. I read all of it in a couple of days. I am a die hard Tibette fan and I am enjoying this different love story of Bette & Tina. I live with someone who is an alcoholic and sometimes it takes them hitting rock bottom and on the verge of losing everything or losing everything before they pick themselves up. No matter how much she loves Tina, Tina will always come in second while she is drinking or using. Glad that Bette didn’t hit the coke or she would have probably went home with someone else.

Looking forward to the next chapter and I will never lose hope that Bette and Tina can overcome anything. I also hope Tina does not become an enabler, and realizes she might have to let Bette go or put her in rehab, in order for Bette to overcome this set back.
